Oh, and the explanation was that I somehow missed a message when you first install the game that you HAVE to run it uses the desktop shortcut and it won't work any other way. I must've just assumed it was a generic installation message and clicked past it without reading it the first time.
Now, I don't have any idea WHY you can only run it off the desktop shortcut and just clicking the .exe causes a crash, but that's apparently how it is.
