Made the 2000s touhou art thread a while back and it had a lot of great stuff. Something special about this era of weeb culture.

lower visual spectrum colors don't get picked up by scanners well. a digital image scanned from printed paper will lose a lot of its original vibrancy and look a little washed out. that said there's still a trend of muted colors with bright accents in character design back then.

>>40400241
>>40400564
CRT monitors are fairly accurate in color reproduction however the majority of them are only VGA compatible, which has a low enough bandwidth to limit the amount of colors it can use. some later CRTs had DVI which can display many more colors and probably looked a lot better, but i never had one of those. i've had several TN LCD panels and i can tell from experience, the same image from the same VGA signal will look exceptionally worse on an LCD than on a CRT. hate TN panels, wasn't until i got my first IPS monitor until i felt the represented visual color spectrum was good enough.

mid 2000s i recall doing my art homework using a CRT on my computer at home and bringing it in to the art lab onto the first iMacs to ship with a TFT LCD screen, the model G4. i never realized how shitty my color selections were until that point. i'd re-work it on the iMac and bring it home and i just couldn't finish working on my projects at home anymore.

given japan is the land of technology and none of them use it, i assume they stayed behind most of this technological trend and never used macs, just continued to use old CRTs and cheap LCD TN panels into the late 10s.

I think I adore everything about this time period, late 90s to early 2010s. Crt monitors with old anime mmos, dreamcasts and ps2s, old anime forums and amvs. The early days of youtubes. I yearn so terribly in my heart for those days. These artstyles, stuck 14 years before, are truly melancholy.

I have desired a community for a long time to share my passion, so I think from now on I will create these threads and hopefully I'll find more people to appreciate this time with me.

I used to have lots of these otaku pics and stuff I screenshotted from old TV streams but I lost them in old HDDs or deleted them since no one cared.

>>40417378
You're like me, it's sorta my main motivation to make art nowadays... to put the spirit of the late 90s/early 00s into it. Back in the day, all of this stuff used to be much harder to come by, there was no catalog for anything, no youtube, no massive amounts of learning materials, people used to painstakingly make fan sites of things they liked and Japan was much more obscure to western audiences due to the internet not being so ubiquitous. Anything you came across that was wildly new was an experience in and of itself.

I thought about creating an imageboard to really share otaku culture away from all the 4chan schizos and even bought a domain name but I gave up when it became obvious it'd just be another imageboard no one would care about besides one or two people.

Early 2000s vocaloid songs are very nostalgic to me.
They have a completely different sound to them, both instrumental wise and obviously the vocaloids themselves.
Even to this day low quality videos are oddly calming to me.
I've noticed that when vocaloid first started gaining some traction producers seemed to write about the vocaloids themselves more, meanwhile OCs seem more popular now.

I miss waka/iichan. Fortunately, a good chunk of it is archived here.
Check it out if you're curious what non-4chan imageboards were like at that time.

Most of the thumbnails are dead so you'll be looking at imageboards without images for the most part. However, the thumbnails that are there are easy to reverse image search making it a good source of 2000s style art.
The best board, /sgis/, wasn't archived but considering thumbnails are mostly dead it's not a huge loss.

How old are the people posting in this thread? I turn 27 in a few months and while I was on the internet from an early age, I was taught to be self censoring; as a result, while I was exposed to a reasonable amount of western internet culture, I wasn't in a position to dig far enough into finding obscure - especially at that time - forums or niche hobbies. I dislike being a poser or claiming I was born in the wrong era but I'd like to hear some stories about 90's and very early 2000's.

For example, I've read that prior to 2008, Akihabara's culture was very different. Men could be seen playing Yugioh in the streets, performing idol's dance choreographies and so on. Is that true? It certainly doesn't happen any more.

Admittedly I may not be the best person to get recommendations from, as my taste is decidedly entry-level outside of a narrow and specific focus on Liar-Soft VNs (which I like specifically because they're often built around strange concepts and were illustrated by artists of the period that I quite like.)

Can you read Japanese or do you need translations? Because the one I've enjoyed the most in recent memory is Seven-Bridge, which I mostly read using MTL and want to re-read after I'm more fluent in Japanese in a few years. Nakamura Tetsuya's character designs are quite charming. Cannonball got a translation patch a few years ago and if you don't mind flat chests, it's a fun ride with some wonderful CG work by Koume Keito.

To my understanding, Kusarihime ~Euthanasia~ is a true classic of the genre, but I only got a little bit into it using MTL before I decided it would be better to just learn the language and shelved my VN reading efforts entirely for the moment (outside of already-translated ones.)

One thing I can definitely say about all of the above is that they have wonderful music and a whole lot of charm.

I think a large part of the nostalgia we all have for this era is because it's the last time we can remember being happy. Genuinely so, without a caveat to that joy. Everything is so serious now. There's so much to worry about and stress over -- not just because we've gotten older as an audience, but because the world itself has changed, and because the modern internet is louder, faster, and more direct than it ever was before.

Those halcyon chuunibyou days may have been cringe, but at least we were free.

If you look at popular themes in otaku media I think the biggest change is that the degree of escapism has deepened consistently and finally took a complete nosedive in the last 5+ years. I feel like the early otaku spirit was like "Hey, wouldn't this be fucking cool" which has regressed to "I hate life, just give me everything I want" (late 90's and 00's: "Hey, wouldn't it be cool to get a gf... in this fucking banger setting").

Humans weren't meant to know this many other humans or opinions I don't think. Bad news/retards are also harder to avoid now than ever.
Early 2000s internet wasn't great either, but people seemed happier and less judgemental, in a good way.
I think the rise of social media has made people too afraid of being 'cringe' and being anything even slightly out of the norm. Now being passionate about anything is looked down on by many and everyone wants to be picture perfect.

But maybe I'm just an idiot who doesn't know what they're talking about.

I don't think you are wrong.
A lot of people seem to be behind so many layers or irony that they can't even decide if they actually like the thing they are obsessing about or not.

It's gotten so bad that you often see things like "real talk" or "honest thoughts" used just to make clear that they aren't trying to pretend to be retarded for once.

I don't think it's only the increase of escapism but also the sentiment behind it.
Before it was optimistic in a sense that they wanted to explore space, live in a world with high tech or sometimes wanting a downfall of society out of boredom for that decedent bubble economy.
Now it's all reminiscing to a time where life was slightly easier in the form of high school sol or wishing for death from truck-kun in hope of an afterlife harem. The cynicism started in the 90's but its been slowly getting filled with dispare until now.

I think they made protagonists more relatable to their target audience.
There was still escapism in old anime and even issekai was a thing but it's different now.
Most issekai tries to turn the world into a RPG and not in an actual different world.
Compare something like Those Who Hunt Elves to something like Gate.
I'm not saying Gate is bad it's just that they handled the fantasy world more like a world and not a place to make video game or self deprecation jokes.

Hot damn, Hand Maid Mei. A pity that we never got Hand Maid Mai. It was supposedly already animated and voiced, but because of some legal issues it never went beyond the first episode. Damn catchy ending theme too.

Well, that was easier than I thought. What was not easy trying to make a 4:3 video of the ROM with OBS and Sony Vegas. At the end I put the ROM in fullscreen and recorded that. Anyways here's the iso and the wallpapers https://mega.nz/folder/31YjgRgI#zdfDfhnJRxlk1EwbVs5pwg

I wasnt going to type this out because nobody would give a fuck but since this thread has been up for far longer than I thought it would, I might as well.

James Bond movies make more money during recessions.

https://thepangean.com/Economic-Indicator-007

https://www.cracked.com/quick-fixes/what-james-bond-movies-tell-us-about-economy

>Who gives a fuck? And how is this related to this thread?
James Bond is the OG escapism. Ian Fleming was an actual Spy. Intelligence work IRL is boring as shit. So when Ian Fleming wrote of high-tech gadgets, fast cars, and sexy ladies. It was all an escapist fantasy to him.

Just like how Ian Fleming's escapism makes the most money during times of hardships, the explosion of escapism with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in America and Isekai in Japan are both fuelled by the fact that nobody has any money. The economy has been fucked for the past several years, especially for young people.

So yeah, I'm definitely echoing all your sentiments on the lack of hope, and increase in cynicism over the past few years. All of which is tied into an explosion in escapist fantasy.

it feels sad to know that this era is gone and probably won't come back. technology is obviously more advanced that its ever been, and social media at that. Nobody cares anymore about the culture as much as they used to, and even if they claim to its half assed and is all for aesthetic and not for actual enjoyment of it. This all means no more customizable anime desktop themes with characters sitting on your screen or downloable custom mp3 menus, no more forum-surfing until 3 am, no more buying posters and figures for less than 50$ (at most). now you can be lucky to even find a decent figure for atleast 50 or 40 bucks. everything in otaku culture has gone so overpriced and bland, I believe it's due to mainstreaming. The internet has changed so much, and it seems like nobody wants to enjoy THIS part of the culture anymore since it's all been abandoned and stripped from the internet for years. Now most weebs would find it incredibly stupid and of course back in early 2000 it was considered stupid too, but not by otaku themselves and actually enjoyed by the community. That's all that mattered. I still have hope in my heart that this era will come back, people like us are the ones that keep the culture alive.

The topic was (if you read the posts I quoted) that anime in the 2000s was a lot less escapist.

There certainly was a lot more gritty and/or tragic ending anime back then such as Kino no Tabi, Stand Alone Complex, Ergo Proxy, Ga-rei Zero, Darker Than Black etc.
