I wasn't "around" then but I've been watching live webcams I could find of Japan since the late 90s. I used to be a big Ayumi Hamasaki and Morning Musume fan and just scoured the web looking for stuff on them and any stuff about Japan I could find like old webcams that you watched using... huu I don't even remember the name of the software, it probably wasn't realplayer but you sometimes had a little interface where you could manipulate the webcam horizontally and it was so comfy.

I wouldn't reduce Tokyo as "any other city" It's certainly easier to get around and I felt much safer even in the seediest districts. It's also the one Metropolis where hole in the wall shops and cafes are still alive. Familiarity breeds contempt, I get that but every city has its charming quirks that still sets it apart from the rest and Tokyo (Osaka, Sapporo, Kyoto, Nagoya to a less extent) fills that niche for me and much more. Sure, you get the special events like shichigosan, graduation ceremonies, seijinshiki, weddings, where formal clothing is expected, but they'll also wear a kimono to go look at cherry blossoms where casual clothing is completely normal, or rent a kimono to walk around a vacation spot.
And yukatas are just worn in summer, being thinner cloth. Often after taking baths, even at home. Of course, commonly for summer festivals, too.
