Well, in my experience, most westerners trying to draw anime (take a trip to dA) make the mistake of just trying to jump straight to anime styled faces. They just try to "guess" where features on the face go, and how the body is laid out.
They do this because they don't have a fundamental understanding of anatomy or proportion, and are trying to draw "symbols" rather than 'shapes' (ie to draw a face by just put a hemicircle on top of a V and bam, anime face, like you'd be instructed to in one of the thousands of annie-may tutorials)
ie. They don't know "realism"
Knowing your realism can't cripple your anime drawings. it's just used as a springboard for pose and action and a repository of knowledge of human anatomy that is then applied in some places and ignored or altered in others when drawing anime. As before, anime is just stylized reality.

Non-regular /jp/ drawfag here. Both extreme side always fight over realism vs stylization for years to no end. It gets tiring once you read the same argument so I'll just stick to practical use.

This is my sample work of studying H2SO4's 5 head loli body proportion. Knowledge on Greek/realist ideal of 8 head; which muscles you can desize, shrink, lengthen; body structure from bones, joint position and all really helps at deciphering the stuff so you can apply the knowledge later (Cirno).

Stylization provides its own difficulty. 4 head, 3.5 head, 3 head etc isn't as simple as ctrl+t realism drawing. You need to make them looks "cute" enough in order to deliver.

>Knowing your realism can't cripple your anime drawings
They can. I sure don't want to see realism in my bkub or Rifyu comics.

>Knowing your realism can't cripple your anime drawings.

I have an awful experience when it comes to artist who 'try to draw' Japanese-styled characters. One time, when I had the courage to go out, I went to a comic convention in my area which had lots of cartoonists. I flipped through their portfolios and found out that those who try to draw 'anime-styled' looks much worse than 13-year-old mangaka wannabes. The drawings doesn't look like manga drawings but a fuse of styles that isn't working at all. And to think they ARE professionals who draw for big-ass comic companies.

Sometimes I feel that those who have an understanding of anatomy, proportion and the certain style they're going for can actually draw things in different styles.

Same drawfag as >>4046831 here. Started from generic weaboo path by tracing favorite artist, and fusing things along the way. Some teen artists kept doing that for years until they're literally stuck in samestyle forever.
Learning realism early is something other artist have to force upon them in order to break from that condition. See 'sameface' plaguing even Japanese popular illustrators like Aoi Nishimata.

Her works sells though. People do pay and acknowledge such sameface artist as professional. Only 'those who knows better' complains, while most of them are yet to make any financial profit.

But that doesn't mean realism is an effective way to draw differently stylized characters. An artist must stick with a certain style to be recognized, just like what is happening to the likes of Aoi Nishimata. From realism, an artist can base his character designs for a certain gender or ethnicity.

Sometimes even designs derived from realism look the same.

She can inspect my gadget, if you know what I mean.

Seriously, my Ipod's been on the fritz since November.

The one who co-opts his waifu from shows/Visual Novels is the 4chan equivalent of the Mass Man.

The one who draws his own waifu is the 4chan equivalent of the Overman.

Very funny.

They're both equally piteous. Go get a real girl from real life.

Why are you posturing as a holier than thou normalfag on HERE of all places?

How very trite. What's next? Calling people fascists? Oh wait, you already do that.

I don't know who you're mistaking me for (Meru-chan maybe?) but if you looked for pseudo-intellectual in the dictionary, >>4047901,1 and a picture of your face would probably be there.

The Mass Man and the Overman are very basic concepts. Most people who read fiction a bit have probably heard of them second hand for example. How you can infer somebody is a 'pseudo intellectual' for using such elementary
concepts is beyond me.

You're using them in an attempt to look intelligent and well-read on the Internet, Athenaki.
Think about it.

Not really, you just internalize these things. They were at the forefront of my mind today because I was watching a video about mass market culture.
