It's a waste of time to try. You will never be able to read at the same level as even a Japanese teenager. Hell, it's unlikely you will get to the level of a Japanese 10 year old. You will forever be stuck looking at dictionaries. If you never can read properly without needing to look something up, that means you failed and 99% of you will be like that. There are occasions in every language in which native speakers may need to have something defined, especially if jargon is involved. However, this does not happen with nearly everything they read like it would be with 99% of people here even after years. In fact, the reason why you have clips like that is because of how rare it is for natives to need to do this IN COMPARISON to the language learners. You do not see natives having a dictionary available at all times and looking up something every other minute, anon.

The fact is that you cannot properly enjoy anything like a native could. You will be stuck needing help or going through tedious memorization frequently. I don't know why, but Japanese just gets a HUGE amount of people who just never fucking get good, but have studied for years.

There was an older Japanese manager I used to work for in my country who moved out of Japan when she was pretty young. She could speak Japanese and would often do so over the phone with her relatives, but could not read a single word of it. She could speak and read English, and could speak Japanese, but not read Japanese. I wonder if it would be easy for her to learn? Apps for gaijin like HelloTalk are not very useful. Japs will expect you to suck and will talk to you like you're a baby. Unless you're already fluent, you shouldn't spend time talking in broken Japanese. If you're already fluent, just use a normal messenger. It can be something other than Matrix. Telegram is okay too.

I don't know shit about Japanese but it's fun listening to it in anime or hearing vtubers or whatever and hearing different little subtleties in their pronunciation.
Like they'll say "あげる" and younger people tend to pronounce the "Ge" sound clearly, while older people will pronounce it almost like "Nge," where their tongue hits their soft palate rather than their hard palate to make the sound.
Or they'll say "頑張れ" and typically it'll be pronounced like it's written, "Ga-n-ba-re," and other times, it's like people will emphasize the "Re" in such a way that it sounds like a "Le" or even "Lay." It seems like it's done for humor or cuteness because I can't think of a situation where someone makes a sound like that organically.

I just finished memorizing all hiragana/katakana but custom fonts are still annoying for me, like for example the に in this image is kinda different from what I see in Anki and the DJT kana trainer.
