i believe miyazaki took over half way through series 1 and ghilified it. the source material was a lot more gritty and the first half of the season was accurate to it. the movies are all stand alone(theres even a conan crossover). the recent OVAs are great and return to the grounded and gritty style. even the dubs of series 2 is great but that would defeat the point.
