Yeah, that's where it started setting in for me. I think it's the characters. Ange is one of the worst characters I've ever seen, and it seems the more I learn about all of the existing characters, the less likable they are. I mean at first you sort of sympathized them because all you knew of was their situation, but as it goes on you realize everyone is fucking retarded and they should all die in the first place.

Personally I think Umineko is the kind of story that can only be judged after seeing the ending.
So far it's all build-up, the delivery will make or kill the game.

Not that it isn't enjoyable right now, I do enjoy it, though my enjoyment stems from the AHAHAHA OH WOW and SO STUPID IT'S GOOD kind of entertainment rather than the HOLY FUCK, I'M SHITTY BRICKS THERE or WHY THE FUCK AM I CRYING type of entertainment.

The scenes between Rosa and Maria were very touching at first, but the just wouldn't end. It when on to the point where I didn't give a shit anymore. Then there was Ange. I didn't give a shit about her from the get go, and half of the story was about her pathetic mary sue bullshit. Episode 3 dragged a little bit, but was still good. 4 only had like 10% interesting content. It could probably have been cut out altogether.

The only parts I came close to shedding tears in were Battler's return in EP2 tea party and his realization of truth in EP5. Shit was so awesome, I just got a lump in my throat. Battler does this "comeback from beyond defeat"-act all the time, so why do I keep falling for it again and again?

I'd say umieko is quite an advance, it stops with everyone is so happy pointless cchat during hours and develops the characters during the first episodes, but of course like any VN, once a character is developed they stop caring about him. Stilol you can see them back to square 0, but knowing their actual background helps A LOT
Ange's part I thought it was pointless in the beginning, but when everything started intermixing with the true menaning of magic I understood it wasn't really, though if she hadn't came back I would have hated Ryu for developing a character during hours and then killing it

Higurashi is character-driven while Umineko is plot/mystery-driven. Higurashi is more easier to consume due to shounen protag and Rika, but the mystery, intrigue and conspiracies are pretty shallow compared to Umineko. I like Higurashi better though.
