Do any of you have the kind of special eye to make out the differences between this new Reimu and the old one? I've been thinking of trying to get one from the upcoming batch, but I can't help but feel it's missing something that was strongly present in the earlier one and its meme images.

You can see the differences on meme pic related, they become more evident the more used you get to seeing pics of them.
v1 Reimu is an old-style fumo (of the kind angeltype made until 2010 with yukari v1, before switching to a new style in 2011 with kaguya), it's got a slightly more potato face and droopier eyes, also the skirt seems less rigid from looking at the pictures.
v1.5 Reimu is a new-style fumo, with a more rounded face and tidier hair and clothes, which look better at first glance but in my opinion detract a bit from the "soul" aspect, which might be what you were alluding to. New-style fumos look a bit more "mass-produced".
This makes old-style fumos worth getting even at high prices in auctions (especially because they will never be rereleased again), while I almost always wait for rereleases before going for new-style fumos.

Aya is a v2 (alternative design, MoF in this case), and her v1 is a new-style fumo so it'll probably get a rerelease either next reitaisai or the one after.
Meiling and Suwako, on the other hand, are v1.5s (remakes of old-style fumos) and their v1s are old-style so they'll never get rereleased again.

I'm currently really pondering over if I should give up on getting one if the shipping is going to end up costing nearly as much as the fumo itself, since custom fees are added on top of it. I've always used DHL and the price is pretty reasonable. They also tend to not lose things like other carriers do.

5kg would be a TON of fumos. There are a few people in my home that buy them, so we always buy together to combine shipping. Most we ever paid for shipping was $93 USD. That was for 17 fumos through DHL.

I miss being able to just order fumos from Amiami and having it be no big deal. Back in the day people would post on /jp/ if a fumo came back in stock so it wasn't like you even had to check for yourself.

So all three fumos are made for order and essentially unlimited until the sale time ends? It seems kind of crazy for them to do this given how little stock there usually is. Hopefully, more fumos get this treatment!
