Hey, /jp/! It's time to discuss Saya no Uta. Did you remember to read it?
Please use spoilers for important plot details, we may have latecomers or other people interested in the VN reading the thread.

I'd like to start with discussing Fuminori. I found him to be an uncomfortably familiar character as he was introduced. A man living in a disgusting world, with only one small thing in his life that isn't shitty. I enjoyed his character development early on, be it positive or negative. He learned to cope with the hand he was dealt at the cost of becoming more and more disconnected with the world around him. If he somehow had something that wasn't Saya, I think he would have turned out a little better. What are your thoughts on Fuminori?

Feel free to discuss other things related to the VN as well.

Pretty fun and solid VN, short and sweet as well. Never got the chance to play it before despite it arguably being a VN that most people being introduced to the genre would read first. Really loved how the game didn't try to soften the blow of its content and right as you clicked start, you had the really irritating but fitting soundtrack accompanying the meat world and Fuminori's friends as disgusting blob monsters, really pulling me in and making me interested straight away.

Only issue I had with it was Ryoko, I kind of felt that her character was pointless outside of the first scene she appears in and unless I’m remembering wrong, she didn’t really have any reason to go after Saya..

>>39854063
>He learned to cope with the hand he was dealt at the cost of becoming more and more disconnected with the world around him
I found that interesting as well, like how a blind person adapts by having better senses or being able to easily remember the layout of their home despite not being able to see, Fuminori eventually began to realize how to tell things apart in the meat world he was seeing despite it mostly looking incomprehensible.

>If he somehow had something that wasn't Saya, I think he would have turned out a little better
I don't think that’s case. Everything was corrupted to him, with the only person being Saya, even he himself saying that he doesn’t believe he would have been able to go on without her being there. He was a man who needed a beacon of light and that’s what Saya was to him, just like how Saya needed him so she can learn how to love.

Kind of sad that I didn't take any screenshots of the game while i was playing so random booru art will have to do

>it arguably being a VN that most people being introduced to the genre would read first
It really felt like a starting point to me. The story was pretty simple, there wasn't very much going on so you could easily predict what would happen next. I don't really mind that though. It was definitely fun though. I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously, while also not being zany. Too much focus on the horror would killed it.

>Only issue I had with it was Ryoko
Ryoko was okay. Her reason for going after Saya was that she couldn't live comfortably in a world with such a thing. She couldn't just write off what happened and move on. It's hard to feel safe knowing of a specific danger. I'd compare it to being afraid of a snake in the woods. It probably won't be an issue for you, and it's almost certainly not the most dangerous thing out there, but a lot of people are especially scared of them.

>He was a man who needed a beacon of light
I meant if he had some other beacon of light. That wouldn't have been fun though. Obviously he would have killed himself if not for Saya as he said early on, but if he somehow managed to find another reason to live, he wouldn't have fallen as far as he had.
Saya was a really good character, I think. They handled her well. She may have had human-like characteristics, but she was still clearly not human. She didn't have human reasons to do most of the notable things she did other than Yoh. She only did that due to human influence. Even if she was good at it, she was still simply mimicking humanity.

Very disappointed I never got around to reading this earlier. The sense of dread the whole way though was fantastic. I did find the rape scenes a bit unnecessary though, Saya being raped hurt me and I would've preferred to keep to only Saya. Besides that massive fan of the soundtrack, added so much more ambience to it.

I guess for me that's just not enough of a reason for her to go after Saya, I just found it very unbelievable how at first she’s a doctor and then all of a sudden seems to be some kind of secret spy trying to destroy the works of Ogai but that might just be me

I found it a little so-so. I felt it was in need for more playtime.
I was expecting it to dive more in what Saya is, or how she was developed. It was a bit too grim for me, but the fact that I felt bad in the end is a big plus, given what Saya and Fuminori did.
The ero scenes were very good. As for my favourite part, it was the whole isolated cabin thing.
Like others mentioned, slowly Fuminori adjusting to his condition was cool.
I wonder if it was possible to prevent his friends from dying. Poor Yoh-san..

I would still recommend it, even if it wasn't fully to my taste. Good way to get into VNs, that's for sure.

It was definitely a bit much at times, but that's just the kind of story it is. It almost has a "classic" horror movie feel to it. By that, I mean those popular films like Friday the 13th or Halloween. It's not something you really need to think about too much.

This scene was just mind bendingly hot. Something about her acting completely without humanity (compared to it usually being subtle) talking about You as nothing but a piece of meat for their enjoyment just tickled me right. Having only read the introductory blurb on VNDB, I expected to see the MC's personal journey about learning how to handle a world that has soured him so much he sees it as rotten.
What I got was a Call of Cthulhu RPG session mostly told through the villain's pov.

I've thought of a change in the schedule. I want to see how everyone else feels about it.
I think it'd be better to start voting on the next VN on the 4th wednesday of every month. It'd make it a bit more practical to finish something a bit longer. It'd allow for more options for the vote. It'll also let those of us done discussing to move on sooner, while everyone else can continue if they want.
I'll wait to decide depending on how the thread goes from here, but so far this seems like a better schedule.

>> No.39869737

I interpreted the voting and discussion would share the same thread since it'd be tidier on the catalog that way. I assumed the vote was going to come along later in this thread's lifespan. Change or no change, I don't want to have more than one thread a month if we can avoid it. We'll try to get everything sorted in this thread. No sense in killing any more threads than we have to.
What I'm suggesting would make it easier to keep things in one monthly thread, instead of potentially prolonging this thread just to keep a schedule. It'd also give us a longer time period to read the VNs.
In short, I'd like to reduce the discussion period by a week. We can continue discussing past that point, but I'd like to make sure everything gets done without the thread dying before we get to voting.

Reread it for the first time in over a decade and it's been interesting going through it again with a new perspective on things. The main takeaway being that Saya did absolutely nothing wrong. Or rather, she can't be faulted for what she did.
While she may be a disgusting flesh monster, she is every bit the cruelly innocent little girl that Fuminori sees her as. Sure she may have killed Omi and did some other inhumane things but that's only because she doesn't know any better. She's a kid burning ants without anyone around to tell her that it's wrong.
The Doctor certainty wasn't going to do it as he saw Saya as a research subject and influencing her too much would skew his observations. Fuminori had a chance once he realized that Saya was eating human meat, but I can't blame him for joining her.

That part really was the turning point for him. He was handling his condition relatively well until he became a cannibal. After that, there was no longer any attempt to see the flesh monsters as human. It would've been interesting if there was a choice there. Maybe chastising Saya could've lead to a true good end. It may have made her think twice before messing with the neighbor and it's not like she needed to eat humans to survive. She was doing fine eating small animals and spare organs.Fuminori could gradually adjust to his condition with Saya supporting him. He was able to drive by the end of the VN, who knows how much progress he could make in a year or two. He might've eventually reached the point where humans no longer disgust him. If that were the case, then Saya could cure his condition and give him a chance to love her as she truly is. Eventually there might come a time where Saya could be introduced to the world. She is highly intelligent and capable of communication after all.
But that's just wishful thinking. Humanity probably wouldn't be ready for the existence of a living blob even if they could have a conversation with it. Omi going missing would cause problems too and it would be asking way to much of Fuminori to stay sane for that long. Not to mention, a happy ending like that wouldn't fit with the tone of the story. Saya's purpose for being there is also an issue. Although, it seems like she had some control over molding the world in her image. She changed the world both because she loved Fuminori and because she wanted to make the world a more comfortable place for him. If Fuminori didn't want the world to be changed then it's possible that she could prevent herself from blooming, but we don't know enough about Saya to say for sure.

Pretty much, even Ogai says that he spoiled a monster like it was a child and even the rape scene tells us just how mentally immature she still was

>Saya could cure his condition and give him a chance to love her as she truly is
I think even without prolonged exposure to his condition still would've left him in love with Saya in the bad end, Fumi can already tell what Saya truly is and doesn't seem to mind but Saya is afriad he wont, that scene was pretty touching for me

>>39871803
I dont think a true good end would suit the story to be honest. At its core this is an extremely twisted love story and thats where its strength lies. Fuminori giving up his humanity and becoming a monster for the only "normal" thing in his world even once he realised what she truly is was makes such a sweet story, for it to backflip and pull a happily ever after ending wouldnt sit right. I feel like no matter what this story was always destined to end on a bad end in some way, there was no way their love was sustainable and thats how it worked best. Either of the endings honestly fit the VN best be either Saya dying to Ryoko's hand or her fufilling her mission and creating a new world for Fuminori. Bittersweet is the best way to describe the story imo

I think Saya was correct to believe Fumi wouldn't be able to handle her actual form. We can see that Fumi's rationality does not overrule his senses during the opening scene. His rational mind knew these monsters were actually his friends; that his perceptions were not reality, so he still tried to hang out with them. He couldn't help but to find them horrifying, repulsive and exhausting to be around and through no fault of their own he grew to hate them for it. He retreated to Saya because she was the only inoffensive part to his senses.

If Saya cured him and let him see her as actual form, she knew the same process would occur. His rational mind would keep trying to reaffirm his love to her but his senses would be disgusted. This disgust would eventually dictate his feelings and then his behavior, as it did with his friends. Except now instead of finding a sole source of refuge in Saya, he could go literally anywhere else to be rid of the assault on the senses.

With the bits and pieces of her we see in the CGs and the slime trails she leaves while moving, I imagined her to be similar to a roper. I also suspected she had to be at least vaguely humanoid in shape. Fuminori's senses were warped but he wouldn't be able to interact with things well if his perception altered the general shapes of things. But now that I'm thinking about it, it's not like the monsters Fuminori saw his friends as were human shaped.

And then there's Saya's ability to fit in a 5cm space between couch and floor. Maybe she really is just some sort of amorphous mass.

I read Saya no Uta in Japanese about a half year ago and I got to say that it really to this day was a story that touched and stayed with me, it is truly amazing how Urobuchi manages to make the most disgusting, dreadful monster into a lovable character so much that in the choice between the world and their love I want to justify the sacrifice of humanity... that's unheard of and insane, but in my mind the circumstances considered makes it acceptable. I think that speaks for how great a lovestory it is.

In the ending where saya dies I felt sad over how unfair it was. Fuminori really had no choice other than suicide and of course he will do what he can to survive, painting that situation in a bad light like he is pure evil felt terrible, after all there truly was no world where Fuminori could spend his days in peace together with Saya, which makes everything feel all the more unfair to the extent that my favorite ending and imo the good ending is when the world changes to fit the love of Fuminori and Saya

But I really liked the emotional rollercoaster that it was, it made quite the impact on me.

There's a lot of flaws with the story, but it's always had a special place in my heart for the contrast between inner/outer horror and beauty, and how the characters give you so much mixed feelings that you can't fully hate or love them

I feel like it could've fleshed out the characters a bit more since there is zero real reason for the read to side against Saya unless they really hated her (why would you even read it if you did) or even just give the read more Saya.
Still and enjoyable read, looking forward to the next one

Alright. Time to start the voting for the next VN.
Two choices are from the last vote. They got a decent amount of votes. I'll think about a better system later. I want to keep them in circulation in case anyone was especially interested in one.
This month's choices:
Kara no Shoujo (~24h) - https://vndb.org/v810
Yukizakura (~14h) - https://vndb.org/v71
Yume Miru Kisuri (~17h) - https://vndb.org/v44
AIR (~27h) - https://vndb.org/v36

https://strawpoll.com/polls/wby5l1W9dZA

I'll make the results visible this time, and I'll post whatever wins once voting slows down. Hopefully these choices are fine.

So about one of the endings, I've always wondered
in the ending where Saya blooms, is Fuminori able to live a normal life? Would Saya be able to stop their children from transforming him over like they're doing to everyone else on the planet?

I liked it way better than Saya, but depends on how much you like crazy martial arts shit and the final twist of the game. I think it got a 15+ remake which might play nicer on Win10, and it still includes H-scenes, rewritten to be more SFW but still relevant.

>>39963183
If you liked Saya, then Sweet Pool is a good choice. It's got a really gloomy, foreboding atmosphere as everything slowly goes to shit. If you like body horror ala birthing/pregnancy, evil cults and religious iconography, you'll be pretty set. Otherwise, I'd say wait it out for the upcoming English release of Slow Damage. Togainu is average, not bad, but kind of a generic battle royale with edgy shit. Wasted setting. Lamento is long as fuck, and about catboys. Maybe if you like fantasy settings with lots of worldbuilding; god tier OST. Dramatical Murder is the most inconsistent writing-wise, yet the most popular. Good art and music, but all the routes feel random and like they just threw in weird traits for the LIs, but didn't try to make a cohesive whole. Whereas Togainu is internally consistent, but a bit samey for route conclusions. None of them are bad picks; depends on what genre you're feeling. But Sweet Pool is the best written IMO, yet the least popular of the bunch.

I was mildly disappointed there wasn't a reason for why Fuminori began to see the hellscape aside from brain problems. I thought it was an interesting detail that the rest of Fuminori's senses worked fine until he regained his sight. I was expecting a reveal that Saya or Oagi were responsible until it became clear no such link was going to be addressed.

But it's not like the horror genre is a stranger to the trope that sometimes things just happen.
