people usually talk in terms of time invested vs return, duolingo takes a lot of time for very little return, BUT, whatever you enjoy and actually do will have much higher returns than whatever you don't enjoy/don't actually do

if you can stomach duolingo/wanikani/we and have fun, just do that for a bit but the actual part where you read for the first time will suck no matter what. i guess part of the point is that doing more duolingo in the hopes reading will suck less is... it doesn't really work like that for most anyone thata described their experience

it's hard to get an unbiased assessment of how effective beginner guides are, since anyone able to accurately compare them aren't beginners anymore
i can tell you that one of them will cover the basics to get you started, and the other one will cover the basics in a slightly different way to get you started :^)
but on a serious note it looks like itazura has a bit more breadth as far as additional resources go, so i'd recommend poking around there no matter what you end up using

honestly im thinking all the guides are garbo, and the real learning experience comes from looking up and figuring how to do things yourself, but that's just how i learn, i think itazura is better cause it has links to a ton of actual things that are useful tho
