The goal is really to just keep doing it. Sightreading improves by sightreading and slowly recognizing bits and patterns within the charts that you can then focus on recognizing bit by bit until where eye see arrow it moves.

Just keep at a few different charts every time and rotate the songlist. just go headfirst your way through them.

It's what helped me pick up the reading in this game and other games.

I'm in the same spot as you, try playing some 9s and 10s and I mean play an entire set or 2 of 9s and 10s. You'll start to notice some of the same patterns in the songs. ITG does a good job telling you what bpm your speed modifier sets you at.

He's right though. If you can't read at least 4-5 notes ahead of the chart, certain patterns could fuck you because you either decided to use the wrong foot, or double stepped when you really really shouldn't have.

I only increase the speed mods once I'm familiar and comfortable with the chart. I max out at around 600-630, but for charts I don't know as well I'll bump it down to around 550 or lower depending on the song.

Everyone I've seen who uses higher speed mods than they really should almost always screw up some pattern because they couldn't see what was coming ahead of time.

>> No.39878114

>>39877994
Why would you suggest to someone who is struggling to clear 8s without memorizing the charts to increase their speed mod, cling onto the bar, and "react" instead of "read" to plan their movements, further encouraging them to use memorization as a crutch when they can't keep up or understand the foot placement required for certain patterns. This shit happens all the time and I see a bunch of people get stuck around 14s or maybe clumsily mash through 16s while constantly complaining about about "bad charting" because they never actually learned how to play the game.

>> No.39878166

Increasing the speed objectively increases readability. If this guys been playing 1x this whole time, going 1.25x isnt a bad idea to try out if hes never heard of speed mods in the first place.

>> No.39878212

>>39878166
I'm not saying you have to play on 1x. I'm saying that at a certain speed, certain patterns start to become vague and easier to fuck up because you didn't set yourself up properly for an incoming pattern. Especially if someone is prone to double stepping. If you start a stream on the wrong foot, and it has a crossover somewhere in it or it's one of those vague streams that start with an up/down pattern, you're not going to be able to anticipate it because your read speed is too high. Hate to say it, but those whose comfort levels end at around 10-11s are absolutely prone to double stepping. I used to see it happen all the time at the arcade.

On top of that, if you just start out reading at a stupidly high read speed, you're not going to develop the skills to be able to read slowdowns. This is another thing I see happen all the time. Players who read at 650 or 700 because that's just what they read at, and then they play something like Cosy Catastrophe or Avenger and they get absolutely fucked in the ass because they have no idea how to read the slowdowns.

There is definitely benefit to reading at a high scroll speed, but that's only after you become a bit more comfortable with the chart and have a vague understanding of it's more intricate patterns.

>> No.39878225

>>39878166
He's already using 2x or higher (>>39872750). Beginners probably shouldn't be playing at anything higher than 300~350 BPM scroll rate, but many quickly jump to 400+ way before they're ready because it gives an immediate boost to the "readability" as they think it is, even though they're sacrificing fundamentals.

It's only double stepping if you're weak willed.

Also, while one should try not to double step, it's more important to be able to identify when you have to, and you need to play at a lower speed to be able to tell if a pattern will resolve. END OF THE CENTURY is unironically a good chart.

Decently fun imo, it's essentially a 4k game but with half the difficulty coming from reading the notes flying all over the screen. Personally I get tired of playing nothing but Vocaloid music after a while, but I mean that's the entire point of the game so can't really fault it for that. I'd wait for user reviews before buying the steam port.

More like 99% of the difficulty. The hardest charts in the game are equivalent to like 8s in IIDX.

how did the IIDX controller come to be? like how did they decide that taking a section of a piano keyboard + turntable would be make a cash cow gambing-esque machine?

and in general i wonder what kind of prototypes companies make when designing this stuff. how do they optimize an input device to yield the most time engagement from users?

Well it's based off the 5key controller which itself is based off turntables and DJ equipment like samplers and crossfaders

>> No.39963414

>>39963215
weird how there is no crossfader despite that slider being essential for scratch djing, if i understand djing correctly. i guess they were trying to hit a sweet spot of accessibility. the influence from DJ controller hotcue pads is evident with the 7 keys sorta representing those but some genius decided to lay them out like a piano instead of a grid as you'd normally find which makes reading note lanes easier.
it just fascinates me how they seem to have found the perfect way to dilute and sort of simulate DJing with this design that's stood the test of time and has the clout it has.

Just build your controller, I built a Pop'n controller where the only expensive part were quality Samducks buttons ($81).

>> No.39964326

>>39962243
they chose those buttons because they were generic select buttons that were availible already and you just put an insert in them and boom, black key. so you have white and black keys, piano layout decides itself. same with popn. you have access to tons of cheap big colorful buttons, need to do something with them. mpcs were a decade old in 1998 if they wanted to make something more realistic they could have.

They don't.
They copy whatever other people did that worked and hope that autists will sunk-cost themselves into thinking the game is good (See: 10 different games that are "Maimai, but with X")

Konami got lucky with Beatmania/IIDX by literally just copying a piano with a turntable before anyone else got to it, then legal'd everyone who tried to do it better (See EZ2DJ)

WACCA tried to muscle in on MaiMai's turf and lower levels were pretty dull, especially early on when the game was new. I'm just hoping that the game is left in a playable state after it gets its plug pulled, but I ain't optimistic given that a dozen songs are getting axed in two weeks with more purges likely to come in the next three months.

I honestly don't see Chrono Circle lasting much longer given its horrendous unlock system and being a clusterfuck of mechanics, and Music Diver looks like an April Fool's joke turned into a game.
