Kitano's directorial debut is by far my favorite of his and one of my most re-watched films. possibly the most deliriously nihilistic cop flick I've seen. It's grim and single-minded, a brutal battle of hideous assholes, in his iconic elegant, laconic style. The climax is one of the bleakest things I've ever seen in film. Potent, with a score that alternates between haunting urban jazz and Mark Mothersbaugh's Rugrats' BGM. Fun fact, it was originally to be a Fukasaku Kinji action comedy but he backed out and Kitano took over, removed all the comedy & blew our minds with the result.

Watching it for the first time on a stream was an experience, no one was prepared for how hard Kitano would go. The juxtaposition of pitch black humor and violence and how graceful and moody the movie is in its formal execution is just incredible. I would say you should watch the original, because it feels pretty unique in how it paces things, but it won't be anywhere near as engaging now that you've watched the new one and already know the systems in place.

I just watched all of "Kono Hatsukoi wa Fiction desu" in two sittings (40 ten minute episodes total) and it was surprisingly great. I'm not usually a fan of teen romance, but each episode was well done and ended in a way that made you want to keep watching. The characters all felt sorta fresh too, despite being generic archetypes. Mostly though, the main girl was cute.

Aside from Lily Franky's phenomenal acting, there's nothing particularly memorable about it. He played the protagonist's increasingly unhinged friend perfectly. The story is a little uneven, and the third act and ending sort of come out of nowhere imho. I wish Masaharu Fukuyama wasn't the lead, they shoulda picked someone not good-looking for such a role. Fumi Nikaido was quite good.

Plenty of otome shows get rated 8.0 scores and I think it's because there are so few of them relatively speaking. and females have a general tendency to rate things higher overall Likewise, with so few gay shows being made, they will be ignored by most, but receive high ratings from the niche audience they are made for, as that niche audience has nearly nothing to compare them against. As well, giving the shows a bad rating would be a net negative for future adaptations as well, so a niche fan would be smart to rate it highly and support it to try and get more similar content.
