it's correct for some of the words in core and incorrect for others. some should've definitely been kanji, because they're written with kanji often enough to warrant learning that from the very start. you'll just have to look them up on jpdb as you read and correct some of them.
膝 is a great example because in jpdb's database it appears as kanji 92% of the time https://jpdb.io/search?q=%E8%86%9D.. so here it's not even a question. but I think for a beginner it's worth learning the kanji form immediately even if it's at like 30%.
