Weird second episode. It felt like this fit better as the beginning of the series rather than the previous one. I also had an issue with how the plot developed. Every time there was some sort of conflict it depicted it like it was a huge deal but then the writing throws in a solution to it as though it wasn't a problem to begin with. Everything just works out for the characters, which defeats any tension that might come later on.

This was a good watch. Seiji Takaiwa's fight scene was so hype, as expected from him. I think each of the Grim Reapers had their own character, but Kenzaki was still Kenzaki lol. I'm not familiar with the lead actress Miho Watanabe but I looked her up, she's an idol. For an idol, her acting really wasn't that bad, she played Reimi Watanabe decently.

He's one of my very favorite filmmakers, the master of lo-fi/DIY, hypertactile, sensory expressionist cinema. A western approximation would be someone like Cronenberg, but Tsukamoto is more surreal and sentimental too. It's also notable that he's an auteur in the most total sense of the word, he directs, acts, edits, acts as a DP, production designer and his own producer too. If you want a taste of his work, I'd recommend checking out Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Bullet Ballet and Killing, I think these are all good starting points and represent different stages of his career and stylistic and tonal avenues well.

There are references here and there, especially the first episode. Episode 9 is a direct sequel to episode 39 of the anime. The final episode is a direct sequel to the anime movie Patlabor 2 The Movie and has a cliffhanger leading to the movie which itself is heavily influenced by the anime movie.
I highly recommend watching the anime, at least just the first OVA and the first two movies. The three of them were written and directed by Oshii Mamoru who also directed and wrote the drama and its movie.

Oh yeah, the OVA and the movies are different timelines from the TV anime, hence I recommended just watching the OVA and the movies because those have events connected to the live-action and actually were made by Oshii who made the live-action unlike the TV anime (he did direct and write some episodes though). Although the film progressed without any real twists, the direction and dialogues were excellent and persuasive. What particularly caught my attention was the camera work.
The scene of jumping from the hallway to the dance floor in a pull shot was impressive. The scenery of a love hotel on a corner, the arcade and the karaoke rooms all gave a sense of familiarity of high school students in a rural area, I love that setting. In terms of teenagers and their outburst of sexual desires, I felt like they were similar to Noboru Iguchi's "The Flower of Evil which I loved too.

Generation Z folks don't even know Kimutaku or SMAP, they never were in existence during their heyday or simply were too young.
That and the drama is shit like almost all commercial dramas today. Even if young people watched it online, which I doubt since Netflix and Hulu dramas are the rage now especially foreign dramas which are better, that will still cost tv networks and sponsors money because hiring Kimutaku and everything that comes with it like making him appear on variety shows to shill the drama is too expensive. This show is particularly shit... Apart from Mizuno (whose side-story has now been completely cleaned up in one episode) all the other students are completely forgettable. Not even one-dimensional - I literally can't recall any of them except the guy who broke his rib in Ep1 and the fat guy who is fat.

Mitsushima Hikari is hitting it out of the park though, her delivery in this scene was genuinely hot. Nice to see two actual adults flirting onscreen instead of dorky teenagers.

I will be really sad if Netflix spells the end of the Japanese drama as we know it... Even though these shows are usually quite bad, at least they're unique. My country has already basically given up on domestic drama and only imports American and UK shows, and the cultural loss has been terrible. It won't since it's failing everywhere else. What they need to do is tell compliance to fuck off and bring some creative freedom back again. 水ダウ understands this and I'm pretty sure everybody else does too but nobody is really putting up a fight or at least some alternative streaming service. Abema has shit dramas and wowow, while good, is too expensive with no genre variety.

Conan is very popular among women of that age range, I personally know a number of Japanese women who are very into it due to the notable ikemen characters like Akai and Amuro.
