It's been two years since I first started reading my first visual novel in Japanese and there's still so much I can't understand when reading, let alone listening. I know why I suck at listening since the Japanese in anime is a lot easier to understand than real life Japanese voices since the Japanese they use in anime is a lot clearer and slower but I thought to myself that I'll be able to read a lot of text already without using a dictionary or without occasionally having to use a million brain cells to understand one line of dialogue/narration after one year of practice but it's been about two and a half years already and I still feel like my level is the same as it was since last year or 6 months ago.
Here's all the visual novels I've read that comes to mind:
Senren Banka (just a little bit)
Sanoba Witches (read through normal route and some parts from two heroine's routes but didn't complete them. I'm guessing 1/4 or 1/2 for one heroine and 3/4 for the other heroine)
Nekopara Vol.4
Nine Episode 3
Nine Episode 4
Utawarerumono Prelude to the Fallen
Utawarerumono Mask Of Deception
Utawarerumomo Mask of Truth (still not done but I've read quite a lot of it. I'm guessing I'm at 3/4 or 3/5 through the story. I'm at the part about a "star.")
Kenseiki Alpha Ride
Tayutama 2 (Normal Route only)
Fureraba (Normal Route and probably 1/2 of one heroine's route and another 1/5 of another heroine)

All that and I'm still trash. I use Anki but stopped using it the past two months because I'm tired of having to study everyday. I'm considering using it again once I'm motivated again. I also use a mouse-over dictionary while reading. To this day, there's still so many words and sentences I can't understand. I think my vocabulary is somewhere between 5000-7000 words last time I checked Anki. I'm too scared to check it again right now. What could I possibly doing wrong? Or am I just stupid and retarded?

I felt the need to write this primarily because I think there are too many people unaware of visual novels (VNs, as I like to shorten the phrase) and their various advantages as early reading material.
Visual novels are a form of video game where the player's primary interaction with the game is through the reading of text and (sometimes but not always) the making of choices. Think a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with pictures and sound. I think visual novels have a strong association with anime girl romance games with explicit sexual content. That association is largely on the mark: visual novels largely focus on romance, and visual novels focused on romancing girls tend to feature explicit sexual content. However, this doesn't prevent visual novels from having compelling, engaging narratives on par or exceeding those in other mediums. A lot of popular anime derive originally from VNs, including Clannad, Steins;Gate, Fate Stay Night, and Muv Luv Alternative.
Visual novels have a number of unique factors when it comes to Japanese learning.
They have a ton of text, nearly always from a single writer. A single VN sometimes rivals full light novel series in length. This means that you have plenty of time to get used to the authorial voice and vocabulary used by the author, meaning you can get a ton of comprehensible input pretty easily.
Visual novels almost always featured near full voice acting (the main character is often left unvoiced). This means that visual novels share the advantage of anime, films, or JDramas of being able to hear words pronounced. This serves to bolster listening comprehension.
Mixed in with the voiced text, there will be unvoiced narration, which means that you'll still be forced to practice raw reading. Most visual novel narration is fairly straightforward, which can help when dialogue gets unusual or slangy.
Visual novels have visuals, which help with comprehension immensely.
Visual novels are digital and can be easily "text hooked" (a program can be used to "hook" into the VN and extract out text as it is printed to the screen) so that words can be easily looked up with a program like Yomichan.
Because of these advantages, I'd highly recommend looking into VNs as early reading material. I think they easily outstrip manga as early reading for sure.

How do you anons feel about images in your mining deck (reverse side)? Do you think it does much of anything to improve recollection of a term, or that it just adds more complexity? I wonder how people even find quality images that are sufficiently relevant and not huge in file size quickly from web queries anyway. I know some groups and people like Animecards/Moeway/Anacreon/etc have used images. I've been comparing my mining deck to Anacreon's 2.3k prebuilt, and bearing in mind that most of the content is very common or simple (as a core deck should be), it feels like there is a bit more to attach the words to mentally besides a simple vocab term and definition. Maybe it's just placebo, though.

Here is how I do sentence cards:
)read something and find something +1
)make sentence card and include previously unknown information on back
)reviewing a card involves reading the sentence and being able to read and interpret it; if I cannot read one of the words in the sentence, or I cannot interpret it, that counts as a failed card.

I've never used english translations on my card, so I don't know what that's like. But if you were unable to read and interpret the sentence to begin with, and instead were just training yourself to recall an english sentence in response to a japanese one, you shouldn't be making a card with that sentence. Just like if you don't understand what a word means, drilling it as a vocab card in anki is pointless to that effect (only useful for learning its reading).

I do not understand this argument that "lol ur just memorizing it bro" because the same statement applies to every style of flash card.

This is an even bigger waste of time than (perhaps accidentally) memorizing sentences.
Rote memorization only commits things to long-term memory. It does *not* improve recall time, which is necessary to learn a language. To improve recall time, you need constant exposure, which means immersion. But the more time you spend slaving away in Anki, the less time you have to spend immersing.
Word cards let you build up a small core vocab fairly quick, and get to immersing shortly after. The goal is to eventually ditch Anki entirely, not to keep grind in Anki until the end of time.
tl;dr sentence cards are bad for the same reason core100k is bad.

Does anyone happen to use Yomichan in their browser on Android? I've got it working on my phone quite well, but it seems there are some extra steps to make AnkiConnect work.
