I use the original. I've been comparing both version in-game and decide to stick with the original for some reasons.
1. More body gesture, compared to PS2 economical one body pose + multiple faces
2. Faces are more expressive, since Ryu doesn't hold back on giving blush, eye/mouth size, etc
3. I have no trouble imagining the prettier version

It's a matter of playing as close to the original as possible but not actually playing the original. I'm sure if we could play the original, we would. The fact is that many of us cannot read Japanese to a high enough level to read the original so we have to settle for MG's translation.

PS2 sprites are horribly generic and unremarkable. Original sprites have much cuter and expressive faces. Hands are minor problem, face is more important.

I find the original stuff to be more expressive, and enjoy it more because I know Ryukishi drew them. The PS2 sprites just seem to be there to appeal to the casual crowd, I don't see much value in switching to them.

The original artwork is so much cuter than the ps2 sprites. Only the elitist of the elite art freaks are going to need to mod a game to uphold their bland standardized art style.

I like the original art, It's not pretty but it has soul and personality.
Unlike it's overall better drawn cookie cutter animu-esque counterpart.

By that logic, since it originally had no voicing, it should be played that way, right? Nevermind that voicing would be an improvemt and would greatly enchanced the game or anything. Same with the upgraded sprites, background and music.

I like the originals more. Definitely more expressive. But the main thing is that it tells more about personality. Take Rena for example, the PS2 one makes her look far less sharp than she is in the originals. It just doesn't feel the same.

Considering the PS2 is a port... Replacement = synonym for upgrade. But to be technical, BMG can be considered replacement, but sprites is an upgrade, and the background is more of an upgrade/additional, really.

I prefer the original for the story-telling (Rena in scary mode made me shit bricks), and the PS2 for fapping (Mion's perky tits).

I think I'll make an umineko patch using these.
