wanna learn to draw anime but everyone tells me to learn realism first. i'm not against the idea, but why should I study for literal years before even starting to practice the thing that made me want to start. whats a retard to do?

the people who are vehemently against learning realism first often leave out the fact that realism is a collection of multitudes of useful skills and knowledge that you can apply to pretty much everything.
The hard part would be not getting bored while studying realism, but I didn't have any issue because I have always loved drawing so I can't say anything about it.
Best is to study both at the same time in your case. Take what you learn from realism and apply it to your anime style, once you hit something you're not sure, return to tradition and learn some more.

But knowing how to color, shade, lighten in one layer is a REALLY valuable skill to have. Nevertheless, to answer your question still, multiply for shadows, overlay for subtle lighting scenarios.
