Moriyashrine DMCA'd by ZUN.
A overzealous translator informs various circles and fangames start disappearing from Moriyashrine.
/jp/ starts GAP (Gensokyo archival project) in an effort to save fangames specifically. (Mostly, there's a subtheme of saving doujinshi/manga work as well.)
The goal is to create an updated torrent so that they do not disappear into the ether.

Really? Where have you read this? I haven't seen Clarste post anything about Complete Box recently, and he was one of the main translators. And I remember Clarste kinda just got ignored when Sanbondo was discussing about making a translation on their Twitter.
Also, I'm not fully sure if Phoenixx Inc. is gonna help making an "official" translation since Sanbondo got them to help out publishing their game on consoles, and they've made Touhou fangame translations in the past.

>Sadly they announced that they were cancelling working on the 4th game because it's a deprecated product at this point but we'll get to see it in complete box anyway.
Some anon stole the SomethingAwful lp translation and made his own patch like a year or two ago. There's no need to rely on the goons anymore for FMW4.

Tbh all these Touhou websites, Moriyashrine and others, should be designed to be takedown resistant - use torrents as the download method, and allow to download all the things at once easily (via an RSS feed, perhaps). So many pros to this: allows people to contribute bandwidth, reduces bandwidth usage on the storage server, speeds up downloads, allows to easily preserve files in case the website/storage servers get taken down, etc. The only two cons are that anyone can monitor who downloads these files and that you need to use a torrent client, but with most platforms having a torrent client (and in-browser torrent clients like βTorrent existing) that's barely an issue.

Always loved how HorribleSubs/SubsPlease work: publish everything via torrents and XDCC. And not only do they publish on their own website, but also 3rd party trackers like Nyaa. If SubsPlease's website goes down, you can go to Nyaa, check the SubsPlease user and have access to all the files. Similar for XDCC, the bots are on Rizon and would remain there if the website gets taken down.

You can take takedown resistance even further, e.g. make the website available on Tor via .onion, so that if the domain name is blocked or seized, people can still access the website, provide db dumps (if there is any db to begin with and you want its data preserved), etc.

Considering that the last time the hdi was updated was on 05/12/21 (https://spaztron64.github.io/th98tuc_site/changelog.html)), the conclusion is that the hdi on archive.org contains some settings and score files for th04 and th05 that were modified by whoever used the hdi to play the games.

The only thing we've really seen is ZUN asking that digital music distribution go through a middleman which gives him a cut - and also is only open to well-connected artists - and even then only BOOTH really acted on it. Last I checked, some JP Touhou doujin circles continued to post albums on DLSite like nothing happened. There was also an incident a few years ago where Ruw asked a Western Indiegogo campaign for a Touhou fangame to shut down, essentially implying that Team Shanghai Alice doesn't see crowdfunding as a valid form of doujin self-publishing. That Smash clone, yes. In general, ZUN proposes two modes of operation for Touhou derivative works:
1. Self-publishing. In this situation, ZUN does not take a cut, but you operate under some restrictions - you must fund the work yourself (no seeking investment, and they see crowdfunding as a kind of investment), you must not represent a corporate entity, and such.
2. Going through a Team Shanghai Alice-approved publisher. In this situation, ZUN does take a cut, but you're allowed to do all the fancy corporate things like getting an actual budget and publishing on console.
As I said, I believe strongly that ZUN clamping down on unauthorized fanwork would destroy the doujin scene - and, as most Touhou fans are secondaries, severely hurt the franchise's long-term profitability. Consider what Konami did to a Tokimeki Memorial doujin work in the 90s.

In regards to the smash clone, (i kinda followed it for a bit, but my memory is iffy given that it was 8 years ago now that it got announced and worked on), but part of the shutdown was also because the team "FromSoySauce" claim to have sent zun an email asking for permission to crowdfund, but never actually did, and then there was some fuckery too where they tried to copyright the touhou characters as their own. Again, i didn't keep up a whole lot, so take what i say witha grain of salt.

Official content is not fan-made content. The entire discourse is over Ruw explicitly targetting games which are impossible to acquire legally without spending $1000+ on second-hand copies (Touhou 1-5). Some people are also upset about Touhou 6-8, as they are only available via import stores and not on Steam - but anyone into /jp/ media knows that any attempt at gaijin legal consumption tends to be suffering.

I wonder if you realize that there's a difference between malice and ignorance. At any rate if you want someone to consider your position, antagonizing them is a good way of making sure they never will.

Go ahead and come across as whiny and see what happens. Otherwise you could just reasonably explain that you're just concerned with preserving games that have otherwise been lost. If you really wanted, you could even share the scads of evidence that piracy generally helps sales. ZUN, despite being ignorant of the west, can't not realize that a huge amount of his popularity in that sector, nearly all of it in fact, was born off the back of illegal downloads--or so you'd think, but if he really has not realized then reasonably reminding him of that could work.

Basically a lot of people are ignorant and think that "wrong is wrong" or some nonsense, narrowly.

Japanese people will harass you if they find out you pirated anything. In general they, like most normals, don't understand even simple concepts like "I can buy it after I pirate it" or "I was never going to buy it, but if I pirate it I can spread it to someone who might" or even "lol did you forget about the used market that ACTUALLY results in lost sales?"

It's all very weird, very basic thinking that you could even easily disprove by reminding people that "borrowing media" and also "libraries, in general" exist, but omg scary piracy!

>> No.39424144

The key word is "find out". Mangamura got about 100 million views a month. Music rental shops literally had stacks of blank CDs by the counter. And it's not like everyone is this way - Ryukishi07 literally gave his fan translators a cameo.

>> No.39424189

Rykishi07 is an absolute outlier. Make no mistake that creators who aren't bothered by piracy exists, but most are completely brainwashed into the "piracy is lost sales" narrative. They literally, simply, do not actually think beyond "you didn't pay for it (in one instance, at least)"

>> No.39424213

>>39424189
I've read many Twitter threads with doujin creators and it's not really about "piracy is lost sales". It's about control. Two major trains of thought I saw go something like this:
>If my doujinshi gets too popular, the original rightsholder might C&D me. I must ensure that it only spreads in culturally accepted locations and in controlled quantities. I cannot send a DMCA because that would reveal my identity to the pirates, unless I'm big enough to have a lawyer represent me.
and
>I want control over my doujinshi. Westerners think they're doing me a favor by spreading my work, but what if I don't want them to read it in the first place? I want to sell my 200 copies at Comiket and be done with it. If I engage with the West, it's going to be on my own terms, not theirs.

>> No.39424257

>>39424213
Well one doujinshi is an entirely different matter. Japanese companies can enforce copyright, they just tend not to based on good faith. I could understand worry over getting too seen, but it really depends on the company. There are not many who will act against you. Like afaik Nintendo is the first and only one that comes to mind for me, and I guess there's whatever the hell is going on with Uma Musume.

For two, xenophobia is definitely a thing, but I can't imagine it's actually that prevalent as a reason. Noticeable, probably, but that's since such times tend to be vocal, weird, and consistent (I've had several artists actually literally block me on twitter just for being American, not for even speaking to them, with at least one I found doing regular gaijin purges and launching into hour-long tirades about the West)

>> No.39424306

>>39424257
>Japanese companies can enforce copyright, they just tend not to based on good faith.
I see it more as Japanese companies only realizing doujinshi exists when it was already too big to get rid of.
>There are not many who will act against you.
Studio Ghibli is a prime example of a Japanese company who goes as far as to delete MADs from Nico Nico Douga. There are more, but it is indeed less common than in the West.
>For two, xenophobia is definitely a thing, but I can't imagine it's actually that prevalent as a reason.
I used Westerners as an example. The point was "I'd like to sell my work on my own terms, and I don't see people circumventing that as supportive", not "the filthy gaijins".

I also think recently there was a particularly notorious H game creator/xenophobe who recently went after /vg/'s porn game database.
Basically I don't know if I'd think of those noticeable types as "common", but I obviously haven't done any surveys or studies on the subject, and am operating on my own visible examples of the (also common in the west) sentiment that piracy is theft, that's that, and that's bad.

>>39424306
>I used Westerners as an example. The point was "I'd like to sell my work on my own terms, and I don't see people circumventing that as supportive"
Still smells xenophobic or rather, I could understand this if it's indeed a Japanese perspective. It's a perspective I consider dumb, but it's obviously still a thought pattern holdover given how many people will NOT post on dlsite but will always post on melonbooks--HUGELY assuming they even offer post-event selling at all

This idea is dying, however, or rather digital distribution is becoming more popular. That's nice, because honestly the old mindset is based on traditionalist silliness. I can understand the hermit who wants minimal visibility, but they're REALLY rare in actuality, and if you truly want little visibility... don't go out, don't sell 200 books, 50, or even 10. It's nonsense

I do wonder if a lot of the doujin scene's customs is, indeed, just "we're doing things this way because everyone is doing things this way".

An artist I followed wanted to release an artbook of Nintendo, Disney and Ghibli characters. The way he did it is by announcing it a day before Comiket, limiting it to 25 copies, then deleting all tweets once they were sold out. Sometimes it makes sense to do it this way, I suppose.

Work on it in silence and release it quietly, and possibly anonymously, and wipe all traces of your presence from the net. Everyone will understand.

As for this
>"we're doing things this way because everyone is doing things this way".
Quite sure that it is, with ZUN being a particularly prime example who took actual ages to consider digital distribution and a hugely influential figure (Toby Fox) to convince him to finally start proper distribution digitally (rather than whatever weird deal the playism thing was) because uh... yeah ZUN, you have fans in the west (because of piracy /cough)

Though Toby did encourage him at the time ZUN claimed he was already planning to bring games to steam. Could've indeed been Tasofro. I'd believe it, they wore him down over a long time.
The only claim made was that Toby Fox was asking for official TLs, which was what ZUN was a bit surprised by--at the prospect of people really wanting that. Well, official TLs aren't likely though.

>>39424516
I don't like, loathe Ruw personally, he just comes across as smug and hardheaded. This is why in the first of these threads I at least was saying "don't bother talking to him". 1) such people don't get convinced of things and 2) they'll just take the arguments in bad faith

Thusly the only big issue is with PC-98's legacy though that brings up an old idea of traditionalism, imo.
Nobody's really bringing it up but it's perfectly possible that ZUN would prefer the PC-98 games sinking into oblivion. I mean, is there ANY indication otherwise? Quite the opposite. He's never sold them, doesn't officially acknowledge them, and when asked about them during the windows transition seemed to refer to them with some embarrassment as he insisted treating windows as a blank slate.
They WERE games he made when he was very young. I wouldn't be surprised.
It might bother people, but like... even in Japan, you cannot legally/easily obtain Touhou 1-5.

They did not quit drawing, and I did some digging to figure out why and possibly when I got blocked by searching for "block" (in Japanese) on his account, and finding a whooooooole lot of bitching across several years, usually every 5/6 months, about gaijin. Some of his complaints made sense, like how western fans frivolously repost art without credit (though honestly, it's hard to care; when you post anything on the internet, it will be stolen. If you don't want it taken, do not post), but he would openly talk about just arbitrarily banning anyone not japanese in order to just wholesale prevent that or... something, which probably had to take a long time--he was very popular.

Does any anon here knows what happened to Doujin Gravity? I think they got DMCA'd to the ground. Shame, they had some doujin games that are very hard to find nowadays.

They were the only website that had the original Touhou Puppet Dance Performance + Shard of Dreams installers. The Moriya Shrine version is "incomplete" and won't work with mods such as the Extended one. Ive had moriya bookmarked for a while and haven't checked it or /jp/ in months. Whats the damage report? Do they have everything under control or is the ship sinking due to no-fun fags.

I saw in the last thread the "remove your media llc" which is literally the same llc that took down a lot of kissanime's stuff before they went permanently down.

It would be a 100% Nintendo move if he ended up selling the same old roms that have always been around in some DOSBox package like GOG does, in the sense of profiting off of the emulation scenes work.
The biggest copyright violator would be with the erasing of a software library license just to slap his own name on it. If that company found out (if they are still around in some shape or form) he could be in deep shit.

Hypohetically, What's stopping someone from making, say, a PoDD fan remaster in like, Pygame? The hardest part would be making the music and the bullet patterns, which are already basically done for you.

Just don't trace any art or steal any proprietary libraries.

Why does ZUN have a boner?

>> No.39443319

>>39442643
Well, why aren't we all playing PyTouhou (https://pytouhou.linkmauve.fr/)) now, and rather prefer piling patches upon patches on top of ZUN's original EoSD builds from 2002? Why has that project made minimal progress in the last 10 years?

The community simply does not want community-owned canon Touhou. They want it from ZUN, while largely ignoring who actually creates all the value for the Western fandom. Why should any developer put time and effort into a quality remaster with translations, replay support, online scoreboards, and proper playtesting, when ZUN and friends can come out at any time (>>39424945), dump a half-baked cash grab release onto Steam with none of those things, and would still get all the money and fan support? Creating fangames is the way more rational choice for people with the skillset.

If the site does some manner of changes to the files, making it a .rar would prevent it by compressing it all into the new format. After that it's just about downloading it, packing it up and comparing the performance.

I want to support the developers too but I would never forgive myself if I give any money to a game that is supported by the Chinese government. We're not talking about Taiwan or Hong Kong here. That is at least excusable. We're talking about a group of developers that had approval from the CCP to release their game. The proceeds are going to them. I'm not willing to support authoritarian governments and that's why I encourage others to at least boycott applications, programs and video games that were made in mainland China. That goes for things like Genshin Impact, Azur Lane, Arkknights, and Girls Frontline. It's the least I can do.
