This is like my 3rd time trying, and I feel like the problem I'm having is an inability to practice. In order to read anything there's a lot of kanjii you need to know so I can't practice reading anything interesting until I learn the kanjii, but I can't remember kanjii if I don't practice them. It feels like a catch 22.

What part of looking at kanji characters give away what fucking kana sounds they are? It's like the sound is random half the time and unless I specifically studied the character in the past then it's a fucking mystery. Is this something obvious that I just haven't picked up on yet?

And why are some Kanji so fucking wildly varied. I saw one for Shi but it was also Yon. Is there an order to it all or just knowledge to be picked on?

For 雰囲気 specifically, 9 times out of 10 people pronounce it ふいんき over ふんいき so don't worry about that one

There's no real way to extract readings from looking at the kanji alone but there are some points to know which will make things easier. Beyond the super (visually) basic kanji, the majority kanji are composed of a phonetic part and meaning part. Basically, Chinese people long ago eventually realised they can't just make a new characters for each word so they started combing them by going "ok, this word sounds similar to this other unrelated word, I'll use its reading and combine it with another character that vaguely 'defines' what the word means". ex. 同 is read as どう (means same), combine it with 金 which means metal to get 銅 (copper) also read どう. The system worked fine then but that was a long time ago and also this is Chinese and not Japanese so there's been deviation since. That is all to say that knowing how to read one character will allow you to figure out the readings of others (though you will not necessarily know the meaning).

I do not recommend trying group characters and memorise their readings like in this video, I'm just showing this as "proof"
Also, all this only applies to onyomi readings. you're on your own for kumyomi.

Well as an English-speaking weeb who has prior experience with kanji, I can say that solo kanji studies were a waste of time that I completely regret. A major waste of time at that; I gave up twice before finally making it through on the third try. And I can say with confidence that it didn't help at all. When I read kanji words, I don't think about the RTK keywords at all, in fact it takes much more effort to recall the RTK keyword for each kanji in the word than to recall the word's pronunciation or definition. RTK lures you into the trap of trying to mentally translate Japanese into English, instead of just learning Japanese.

Japanese has unironically the most soul on earth. The way how to speak (while technically pretty simple, the pitch accent still creates a melodic comfiness), the writing system, the way how words are created (not like in Chinese where the "ching chong ding dong" is created because it's not vocal based like Japanese), and especially that retards will never be able to understand it.

And with history it's actually pretty simple. Japan is pretty much Chinese and Korean history and so if you know Japanese history, you are more or less "fluent" in east Asian history which is unique to Western history.
