39346042 No.39346042 [Reply] [Original]

I'm going to be real for a minute. I may have kids someday. I don't know that I want all of this stuff in my house forever. I want to at least slim down my collection at some point without just throwing it in the trash. Taking it back to nipland would be a pain in the ass and I worry it would raise flags with customs.
Does anyone have any experience with reselling this kind of stuff in the US or North America? Is there any kind of platform that supports that?

As another doujinshi collector I would advise you to keep them, they’re treasure that you will probably never be able to find/buy again.
I started collecting many years ago ever since I started living in Japan and have around 4~5k books. If you have kids you can just buy a book shelf with doors that have a lock, no need to get rid of your collection.
In my case I mostly buy story-driven books and not as much R18 stuff, but I do think I would lock up my NSFW stuff if I ever have children.

I don't know about domestic resale, but there are a number of Japanese sites that may buy them off you. It wouldn't hurt to contact mandarake or melon books. I haven't been to one in like 7 years so I'm not sure what the current social climate is like in terms of what's for sale, but last I went the doujin-peddlers had everything, so you could offer to sell to them.

Says more about you than the anon who doesn't intentionally exclude themselves from your existence just for getting married.
I ain't married or date but it's such an unexceptional thing on its own that having strong negative feelings about someone becoming married is something I rarely hear from reasonable people.
Though I guess spamming GET OUT is already represents that.

Coincidentally I have a few hundred doujinshi that I have no reason to really own, since most are scanned by now and I don't care for reading the physical copies. I scanned some of them myself for Sad Panda at least. Should probably go through and check how many still need scanned.
I don't mind keeping on to them, but since I still rent it does bug me a bit when there is the yearly inspection/pest control visit, since it is enough to not fit in my vehicle and there is always the nonzero chance of them moving boxes around. I am aware 99% of people could not give a fuck if it is of little direct value of course, just like with 3D porn mags.

The fact that he wants to get rid of his doujins instead of passing them onto his kids probably means he has no intention of raising his kids to appreciate otaku culture, making him a sellout and not welcome here. That's the case for the vast majority of people who marry and have kids.

>The fact that he wants to get rid of his doujins [...] means he has no intention of raising his kids to appreciate otaku culture
Fair, you're talking to someone who scanlates and literally has boxes of doujinshi from both mail order and going to East Asian conventions, and at the very least I see nothing to gained and something to be lost by destroying them. Wouldn't be in a relationship with someone who objected of course, in the same way I wouldn't object to them spending their own money simping vtubers or writing yaoi slashfics if they were otherwise a great partner.
>instead of passing them onto his kids
Passing down what is represented in the OP pic in particular?
I'd argue about that selection really being appreciative of otaku culture beyond the sheer fanservice/fapbait aspect of it, while conceding that pornographic material doesn't have to be low brow. But unless he just leaves them someplace that isn't too obvious but can be found by them snooping, I really struggle to think of a way to pass them on that would have the intended effect of self-discovery. I have never heard of anyone sharing their own porn with their kids, adult or not, so I have no idea what you are expecting or find reasonable.
More importantly, his influence will likely either make his kids get into THEIR generation of Japanese media pandering to nerds in Japan, because that's something they consider visceral, fresh, and "theirs", or have them reject it in the same way kids have rejected "dad rock" from the Beatles to Pink Floyd to Metallica to Radiohead to etc.

If he wants his kids to discover otaku culture like we did, just throw out recs to stuff that has already stood the test of several decades and can be enjoyed by the family at a formative age, and don't monitor their internet/computer usage. Like how my coworker builds gunpla and shows his kids gundam and other mecha series, LoGH, etc. If that doesn't click it probably wasn't meant to be.

My man, most of my collection is porn, and I both preemptively acknowledged that "pornographic material doesn't have to be low brow," while not implying non-H is higher-brow.

How quickly did you have to stop reading my post to assume you clearly had a rebuttal that I did not already make myself?
That only comes up in the the second sentence of my second response, and misses the point entirely.

I have nothing to say but to reread, and if you've got nothing to add you don't need to go digging for a label to unsuccessfully slap on my dissonance.

I read it through to the end and what I got out of it is "porn bad for kids. have them read old shit." Sorry you took offense with on the point reductive statements.

>> No.39537872

>>39537707
If you really need it to be reductive: "the pathway that kids get into porn is not the same as the pathway they get into a general interest which may have porn, and the former excludes direct parental intervention by kids themselves. So less private, intimately consumed media is a better way to introduce your kids to your cultural tastes." That's specifically why I mentioned "don't monitor their internet/computer usage." That's how kids these days usually self-discover porn for themselves.

It's such a boring take you might be skipping over it, but that's what I'm arguing with the other person.
I mean, tell me of situations where adults in world society present their kids with materials intended for masturbatory consumption as an effective means of transmitting cultural appreciation of a genre as a whole, over, say, masterpieces of said genre.
Yes, you can theoretically come up with, say, a kid who is understanding and not embarrassed of his Dad giving him a YASSY doujin as his first interaction to Touhou, and getting into it from that instead of, say, hentai site. But does that not seem off to you as the norm and expectation of parent-children interaction anywhere?

If they above scenario seems dumb and overly contrived, tell me what situation wouldn't be.

I look after my Sister's kids from time-to-time since we're in the same town and our parents cannot, pretty uneventful even if she's away for the weekend, and they are getting old enough to mostly look after themselves. But no, I don't have a partner at this time and have no plans to have and raise my own children.
>Would be extremely disingenuous and, pardon the zoomer speak, cringy to keep posting condescending crap like this to lecture me with.
It is only condescending in that I am really, really trying to get the blood out of your stone so I can tell whether your are more in the camp of:
A. "Using creative works of some genre or scene intended for masturbatory consumption is not an effective method to transmit your (sub)culture to your kids (for reasons already stated)"
B. "Using creative works of some genre or scene intended for masturbatory consumption is or can be an effective method to transmit your (sub)culture to your kids (because of reasons which have not been stated)"

Yes, I am trying to pinhole you that much because I have never encountered someone, even on 4chan, who either can't agree with A or cannot specify B. Your desire to reply without doing either is confounding and begs me to reply.

If your sister has any sort of parental sense, she won't let you lord over her kids.

You think I don't normally leave them to their own devices unless they need to complete homework or request something? If I'm in the house I'm usually on my work laptop, or doing some outing if they need groceries or whatever.
