Start by aiming for material that's within your understanding. I don't mean "I know what all these words mean and how they're being used!" I mean "I know the general outline of what's being said and can accurately make judgments about the information being presented". The usual rule of thumb is about 80-90% comprehension, where you can guess at the gaps in a reasonable way and make sense of the overall meaning without much issue. This does two things: It helps refresh your memory on words you already know, and it gives you examples of new material in context so that when you sit down to study them later or encounter them again at another point you have an easier time assimilating them. Comprehensible Japanese is pretty solid for beginners, since the woman who runs the channel draws as she speaks and gestures to things on screen to get her point across. If you're a bit further along and feeling confident, audiobooks of children's stories or JLPT listening practice videos are pretty good, especially if they include the script so you can read along or check your accuracy.

If you really want to just train your ear to pick out phonemes and you're not worried about understanding a single word of it, just pull up any stream from Marine, especially when she plays a horror game like Outlast, and sit back to listen to her ramble at high speed.

what yuta says here is what i believe may be one of the most difficult things to achieve in japanese for a native english speaker--and that is word choice. you may have perfect grammar and pronunciation, but i think that to have word choice at a native level requires that you have extensive conversation practice and practical usage with natives--something that apparently which matt has according to a podcast interview i heard a while back

Japanese verb auxiliaries are a weird topic, there's a whole book on them, but basically they come in four forms recognized by linguists. The practical upshut of it is that either the two verbs have some manner of blended meaning, one verb is the action and the other is the means of performing it, one verb is the action and the other is the degree to which it is performed, or the meaning is lost to the annals of whatever metaphor or story first spawned the strange combination (and yes, there are a couple of them that only make sense abstractly). When you see verbs being stitched together like that, sometimes they're set-phrase style where the combination just...means a certain thing, but other times they're made up by an author or speaker to give a sense of depth or nuance to their meaning. The ones that are common enough you'll learn given time, and in the rare cases where someone comes up with a new one it's usually easy to guess by context (and if it isn't then they're just being poetic for the sake of poetry). So as for why she used the phrase "passed by," I would assume that she means that it passed to the extent of it being すぎる, exceeding. It didn't just pass and stop, but passed and kept going and going.

Just take it a step at a time. If you need to change the settings so you're only worried about 20 a day, even if your backlog grows you can treat it as extra credit. I had a death in the family and had about 1000 cards across Anki and WaniKani to get to when things finally settled down, and I was grinding so much for so long until I structured my return so that I didn't feel so pressured. It might feel like cheating at times, but if it helps you get back on the wagon to pause some new cards and focus on mastering the things you were already working on then at least it's progress.

Focusing on the radicals is an alright place to start. I would use a chart like this and really get to know some of the important ones first, so that you can pick them out and get to grips with their common uses and meanings. There are a lot of radicals that almost always appear in words with specific connotations, like how the character for water 水 is only one line away from ice 氷 and usually appears in some form or another in words related to water, such as the three lines on the left in 湖 for lake. Or how fire 火 is used as four vertical lines like a flame cooking something above it in things like 熱い. There are other radicals that, when you see them, mean that the character is often pronounced a certain way. 剣 and 験 are both けん, for instance, and you can see what shape they share that you can use as a marker. If you want an in-depth dissection of where some of these shapes originated and the underlying logic behind them, A Complete Guide to Japanese Kanji is a pretty good reference book.

well i did 60-70 cards daily as an experiment and some people have done much more, the real limit is the way review time balloons, eventually you have to stop adding cards so it evens out
