NTA but what makes FSN unique is that the romances, while definitely important, don't exist for their own sake, as it were. They are a means to move Shirou's character development forward. Every single heroine and her romance are meticulously crafted toward getting Shirou toward whichever predetermined end goal Nasu had in mind for that route. Saber helps us lay down the foundations of the character; Rin and her own plotline about learning to moderate between her being a magus and her pursuit of personal happiness are perfect for a route where Shirou has to learn to strike the same balance (not to mention that one of the central thrusts of UBW is that Shirou feels guilty having fun and he doesn't know how to feel about Rin since he finds her personality and teasing really fun - Shirou slowly loosening up, learning his own self-worth thanks to Rin and accepting the fun without feeling guilty about it by striking back at Rin with his teasing is one of the most kino aspects of UBW); Sakura puts him in a scenario where compromise is impossible and we see Shirou being pushed to the breaking point. Adding to this is how each route flows into the other, with each further peeling back the layers of the character. There is an escalation where all the three routes form one cohesive whole. In contrast, what would a Caster route offer; especially in the wider context of FSN? It's all just very gimmicky with no deeper thematic or storytelling value.

Everyone else being a "prop" for Shirou's story and having meaningful dynamics are not mutually exclusive though. If anything they go together as the characters were created and given meaningful dynamics within that specific context of FSN wherein Shirou is the centerpiece. Because those characters' arcs and depth was developed in that context, it is difficult (though not impossible) to put those characters in scenarios that give them meaningful depth to that which they already have. I like how Kirei is handled in Zero but even in that his relationship with Kerry is defined by how it contrasts and parallels the one he has with Shirou in HF. Much has been said about how much POTENTIAL there is for stories with Rin where Shirou isn't the center but how have any of those stories given her even 1/100 the depth she has in FSN? Her use in Adventures and Strange Fake has so far been "I CLAPPED COS I KNOW WHO THAT IS" tier. Notice how the first thing people were interested in about Rin when she first appeared in Adventures was whether or not she was with Shirou lmao. I tend not to like it when characters whom I really like are brought back as zombie versions of themselves for purely gimmicky stories that don't further develop their character in any way. Their stories were over and done with in FSN. Let them rest.

No. For a character to be a mere prop or plot device they would have to completely lack an inner world. Although from a storytelling perspective the characters "merely" serve the purpose of "just" moving Shirou along, the main cast in their interactions with Shirou get extremely fleshed out and we see the depth of their inner world. We learn about characters through their interactions with other characters and certain characters are more compatible with specific characters and less so with other ones.

The cast of FSN were created from the ground up to exist in the ecosystem of FSN and were thus created with Shirou in mind and are unshockingly uniquely compatible with him. Saber's interactions with Shirou reveal a lot about Saber, her struggles, her goals, the nature of her ideal, how she views kingship, etc. Saber's interactions with Rin do not. Rin's interactions with Shirou reveal a lot about Rin, her insecurities, the conflict between her rational and her emotional side, her hedonistic streak, etc. Rin's interactions with Kirei do not. Kirei's interactions with Shirou reveal a lot about Kirei, his distorted nature, his conflicted feelings on said nature, his hollowness, etc. His interactions with Illya do not; and so on and so on.

To fully take advantage of a character's potential and to properly flesh them out, you need to create the kind of characters that allow the aforementioned cast to reveal their whole inner world through their interactions with said characters, and when you have a cast of characters in a preexisting completed story with finished characters arcs that can be difficult sometimes. The issue is that none of these characters have been treated with any finesse in most spin-offs because little care has been put into crafting the kind of scenarios or characters they could bounce off of without having to rely on Shirou. Saber in Garden of Avalon and Kirei in Zero are fine - and they are stories defined by their connection to FSN. Illya in Prillya is basically a completely different character and Rin is just there for fan service in... anything she appears. They haven't been used well. Ironically attempts to have these characters exist in an environment without Shirou have done the most to reduce these characters to but plot devices since the writers clearly don't understand them and also only seem interested in their superficial characteristics.

Nah. Anyways, "long = bad" is one of many things I don't take seriously especially when it comes to Type-Moon of all companies. Fate/Stay Night is still one of the longest VNs ever. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that 99% of the people that post in here like F/SN (it would be a bit strange to be here if you don't) so you should presumably be used to long VNs. I dunno if anyone has ever done a count of the text (plus I'm going off my vague memory), but day 16 of Heaven's feel and the final day of Ciel's true seems pretty comparable in length to me. As for some other games off the top of my head, Dies Irae's finale is probably the longest final confrontation I've ever read and it might possibly be the longest one period. Senshinkan's final chapter (both games) was extremely long. The final chapter of Demonbane (both of them too) was pretty long. It's pretty much a staple of the genre. Tsuki R's final day I would say is on the longer side of the fence, but it's not the longest one I've read.

If you read the source material you would know it's impossible for her to initially have emotions without Shiki. The idea of shipping a character whose romance is such an integral aspect of her identity and development with a non-entity is extremely sus. In general, the girls in that game have very specific circumstances you can't just readily insert anyone into.
