I stopped keeping up with Newtype USA once it got discontinued. Reason: I don't speak moonspeak.

Play Magazine also had a poll where Eva was ranked #1 as one of the greatest animes of all time. (I think it was in the issue where they reviewed the Berserk DVD.)

Anime Insider once did a poll for top 100 anime of all time and Eva came in second. And in their other poll(s) Eva has consistently managed to be ranked in the top ten spots.

Japan also had a poll of greatest anime of all time (this was a much bigger poll than the American ones) and Eva was in the top bracket (I still cant remember if it was above or below Gundam).

And in terms of DVD sells, Eva is in a league of its own both in the west and the east. (But then again, so is all mecha shows.) I know popularity doesn't necessarily mean overrated, but Eva fans keep buying the Eva DVDs because they think it's the best thing ever. Gainax got their reputation as being money grubbers after they released several Eva DVD collection sets: VHS, remastered VHS, DVDs, remastered DVDs and movies, platinum edition (which cost 500$ in some places), and blue-ray.

Well, I hate to tell you this but Eva has been getting the most coverage for the last decade. Eva isn't half as popular as it used to be. Same thing goes for DBZ.

Also, I too don't understand the appeal of shows like Haruhi in Japan. Haruhi may be popular in the east but it has an average following outside of Japan. Fact: there has never been a popular slice of life anime that aired on one of our cable channels in the US. It'll be a long time before shitty slice of life shows like Haruhi and Lucky Star catches up to Cowboy Bebop, Naruto, and DBZ's popularity.

As someone who just watched evangelion for the first time just a few weeks ago, and seeing how it always gets voted as the best anime ever, I can say with certainty that evangelion is not only incredibly overrated, but I would go as far as to say that it's not even very good.

The first half of the show was alright, but you know, general mecha anime.
Then the second half of the show hit my media player and one thing after another just quit making sense.
By the 24th episode it was nothing but shinji freaking out and everyone having mental breakdowns, making the already convoluted plot indecipherable.
I wont even mention eps25+26 for reasons I'm sure I don't need to explain.

So then I watched the other ending made.
I could throw out words like "pointless" and "what is happening?" all day about these movies, but let's just say that I was even less impressed with them than eps25+26.

On a scale of 1-10 I'd rate the show a 7/10 and the original ending a 3/10, while the movies get thisisfuckingstupid/10.
