Mesugaki-ge aren't supposed to get this real.

After playing until the end of chapter 4 of Amayui hard mode when it was released (got the tank girl), I dropped it. Eventually I realized that Eushully hard modes are terrible and I wanted to give it another shot on normal mode eventually. I did that now. (finished chapter 5, aka ghosts)

hard mode amayui:
-door combat (tank who's good against attack elements into door, ranged characters around that)
-defensive things in def missions absolutely pointless -> door combat
-door combat and conga lines through all maps
-need to basically make sure to get ALL upgrades of equipment, make everything and so on
-door combat
-hope you don't get bad levels

normal mode:
-def stuff is actually alright now and the battles work. You can even go into the offense
-In general, you can split up units and door combat basically doesn't exist anymore
-While you still want upgrades, you don't have to be that anal about it anymore. Same for bad levels. Elemental affinity is still super important even here.
-Still worse than himegari, because of the big rooms with the whole conga line invasion you have to do, but not all maps are too bad on normal mode. Often the big rooms can also be brought under your control relatively fast. On hard mode you have to wait at the fucking door until the spawners stop spawning as basically anything not MEANT to be attacked by an enemy dies immediately.

Around the end of chapter 4 there's a certain map that gives you giant enemies. I still remember to this day, that the ENTIRE room to the top left of that map was basically filled with them on hard when I reached it. Like 20+. After all hard mode door combat takes time.
On normal mode you can actually spread up units, and be there when there are only 3 guys or so. It's crazy how different the game plays, and how much more in line everything feels with the original Himegari experience. While still a bit worse, (some maps are too conga line = linear) it's quite fun.

So, why the flying fuck does there need to be a hard mode that just makes the mechanics break and the intended play-style no longer work? In recent years I think more and more that hard modes need to be avoided, unless you play a Gust game or something. They can't compare to genuinely high difficulty games. [/rant]

Has anyone gotten Textractor to work on Muv-Luv? I could only run SmartSteamLoader.exe with Textractor but got no hooks, but I was able to attach muvluv16.exe and got like 30 percent of the words per line. Managed to get around it via a lot of bullshit. Turns out if you use a third-party service to login, you get assigned a random string of gibberish as a username that's viewable from your account details, and then you can manually assign a password by "resetting" it (even though you never had one). These credentials will hereafter function in addition to the 3P button.

Unfortunately, doing this also for some reason makes your account susceptible to the region-lock again, so you have to hop on a VPN to even look at your own fucking library. Some of the most inane bullshit I've ever had to go through for a VN.

Now even though it appeared to accept the credentials, nothing happens anyway when I run the executable, and neither a re-extract explicitly specifying Japanese ANSI instead of letting it auto-detect + a system reboot worked. Too tired to troubleshoot further, fuck CLOCKUP

In this case I used https://github.com/Plagman/gamescope under Linux with the FSR upscaler. I actually didn't check how much FSR makes a difference to the other upscalers though.
Not that it looks bad on the screen but those screenshots are also actually downscaled from my monitor resolution again when doing a screenshot: 600p -> 1440p -> 720p

It's still pretty jank and hit or miss with VNs since it doesn't handle additional windows like configuration or startup windows well but it's pretty nice for the ones that do work. It also does exactly what you are looking for since unlike magpie you specify an internal resolution for the game and an external resolution for the window or fullscreen.
But unless you are already on Linux anyway I wouldn't recommend trying to switch for that. It is really hit or miss and more often than not I need to run the games without it or I just boot up a win10 vm for magpie.

Just finished Omega no Shikai and it was awesome, I really recommend it to everyone here (It's a very weird game though)

The art, the characters and the OST were very well done and the story is executed in an interesting way. It touches some interesting themes and some parts reminded me of Dies Irae (and chuu2 in general) in the way they were done and what was going on in the plot.
So yeah, great game. Hopefully it gets more attention soon.

Somewhat possible because like I said previously, the first two thirds of the original game were not about the heroine but about worldbuilding (townbuilding?) and various side char substories. The second game splits off as a what-if at the end of the side character story lines. Very unnaturally, but it's still a continuation in that sense. The problem with that, however, is that this common route of the first game is filled with Shiro's H-scenes. It's natural for them to be there since their relationship's been that way since before the story started, but it would seem pretty unnatural in a full-price game.
Either way, I hate ladder structure with the true route being the first route. Terrible, horrible, abhorrent.

What VM?
I use virtualbox mainly but I find that it can't play some games still. Especially the older kinds.
The only surefire way I found to play with 100% compatibility is hooking up an old laptop to power and connect to it via remote desktop. But my laptop's fan gave up and I couldn't find a replacement.
