Why are Touhou games so hard?!

I've been trying to beat EoSD on Normal for 2 years now, but I still can't do it. ;_;

>> No.3915479

Start with IN on hard; it's easier than EoSD on Normal.

>> No.3915486

Are you serious? I 1cced it on normal after 2 weeks, and finished off flandre after another 2 weeks.
I'd suggest playing on lunatic for 8 hours a day, it'll make you tough enough to 1cc it on normal after some (reasonable) time.

With touhou you have to grind it hours at a time, no rest or 20 minutes a day kind of shit. Watch replays and your own replays.
>>3915479
EoSd is a bastard on Hard and evil on Lunatic but it's pretty tame on Normal.

its not even that hard a shmp you are smalltime op!

well, at least you can fap to flandre.

The Normal-Hard gaps aren't too severe. When it gets to the point that the first three stages feel like they should be doable but still don't leave you with enough to get good practice in on four through six, start practicing on Hard. By the time you're used to it, Normal will be practically mindless. Meanwhile, get into the habit of bombing whenever you feel threatened. If you die with bombs in stock, you're wasting resources that could take you two or three spellcards further - each.

Play a variety of games, not just the one you're trying to beat unless you're going for Hard and up. At this point in your skill development, it's better for you to get a number of patterns to consider until you can make the connections and increase raw hax. Learn where you can afford to play for score. In most games, this ties in with the extend system, and having more lives is never a bad thing. EoSD uses a static score-based system, PCB and IN use point-item milestones, PoFV and MoF use score, and SA and UFO have unique systems.

Most importantly though, as with any training it's good to push yourself. The more you practice (even if it's a bit too much and you need to take a day or two off) the faster your skills will improve. If you're only trying once for every day of those two years, you've gotten about as much practice as a determined player does in a single month.

Most of all, remember to keep trying and keep having fun. Whether you win or not, the games are really entertaining and it'd be a shame if you quit playing just because of the pretenses a few elitist nerds hold.

>> No.3915772

I managed to 1cc normal in a week with 5 lives.

Now I know some people are mode adept for this type of games, but maybe you are trying this the wrong way OP. Have you tried changing your control scheme? Keyboard, gamepads, arcade sticks? Finding what suits you can make a hell of a difference. Also, have you downloaded replays or watched on youtube people playing the stages you have problems with (EoSD most likely stage 4)? Do it and then practice them until you can do it without taking any hits.

And be persistent. Trying to beat for 2 years does not count if you fire the game once and give up before reaching the later levels. See where you make your mistakes, go in practice mode, watch replays and try to address them. You can do it.

reimu b

>> No.3915827

>>3915785 ignore >>3915795

It's all down to preference. Reimu's got the smaller hitbox advantage as well as a less brutal counter bomb window, but Marisa's speed can help you getting through stages and spellcards where you need to zip across the screen quickly plus her firepower generally means you don't have to survive spellcards as long. That said, if you're going straight up survival, Reimu A's not half bad since you have homing amulets to hit the bosses even if you're on the opposite side of the screen from them. Marisa A's shot type is brutally damaging to help you power through spellcards but Marisa B's Master Spark bomb is overpowered, so it's something of a tossup.

On Reimu B, just don't do it. If you want the non-bomb firepower to take bosses down, just go with Marisa A. She does it much better.

>> No.3915841

Touhou never seemed very hard to me. What other STGs do you play?

The hitbox is visible and everything, how can you lose on normal? That doesn't apply to OP with EoSD, but everything goes in slow motion on non-hard/lunatic modes...

Little mix-up here.

Reimu doesn't actually have the counterbomb advantage in EoSD, though her hitbox is definitely smaller. That and the naturally lower speed makes it easier to survive, but that's all. Reimu A's shot seems to be better for survival, until you realize that even with the homing amulets and the concentrated fire together her damage output is the lowest of the options. If you can keep up the dodging for as long as it would take without aiming, then simply finishing it faster is usually the better choice.

Marisa A's bomb is just as powerful as Master Spark in terms of damage when used properly, but Master Spark is just so much easier to get mileage out of. Marisa B's shot is also good for its piercing lasers throughout the stage portions, and can be shotgunned when necessary.

Reimu B totally sucks though, yeah.
