be sure to read John's religion/story
>How I got 180/180 on N1 in ~8.5 Months!
https://rentry.org/9pe4o

But essentially what John's method religion IS:

* Start reading every day (and listening)
* Go through a grammar guide (like Tae kim or Cure Dolly)
* Go through a common vocab deck (like core2.3k)
* Mine stuff into Anki that you encounter in your Japanese media

A detailed guide of what John did can be found on
https://pastebin.com/0ANbbfHR

*John Bless your gains

The whole idea of "gmi" and "ngmi" is stupid because there's no endgame here. You can't actually learn any language. You might think you know English, but any English linguist would put your ass to shame, so can you really say that you "learned" English like you would learn a poem or something? Because you certainly haven't learned all of it.
Language is infinite. You will be walking this road for as long as you're using the language. You will get better, but you will never be perfect. So stop trying to find a finish line where there is none, and enjoy the process instead.

The whole idea of "swimming" and "drowning" is stupid because there's no endgame here. You can't actually learn any skill. You might think you can swim, but any professional swimmer would put your ass to shame, so can you really say that you "learned" how to swim like you would learn a poem or something? Because you certainly haven't learned all of it.
Swimming is infinite. You will be swimming this road for as long as you're in the pool. You will get better, but you will never be perfect. So stop trying to find a finish line where there is none, and enjoy the process instead.

That is a very nebulous point too. "Comfortably understand" might mean different things to different people, and fluency is also difficult to define. When you see a wall of Japanese text, is your immediate response to almost brace yourself in preparation for battle? Do you unconsciously tense up in order to “tackle” the text? Do you have an underlying sense of anxiousness that you won’t understand what you read?
From asking around, I noticed that attempting to read or listen to raw Japanese triggers a mild stress reaction in a lot of people. And it appears that some Japanese learners never really unlearn that habitual reaction. They get to their 20th book and instead of relaxing and trusting what they know as their eyes calmly glide across the page, they still relate to every sentence like a test they have to pass.
I made a thread a while back asking people “when did reading Japanese start to feel automatic for you?”. I was very surprised to hear that almost none of them had experienced an automatic-feeling flow of reading yet, despite some having read over 40 books!
Now I’m starting to think the reason that experience is so common might be because many learners went into Japanese in the first place with the belief that it looked really really hard and complicated to understand — causing them to tense up in the face of raw native material in anticipation of the difficulty, and they just never really trained themselves to stop doing that, or even noticed they were doing it at all. As result, that lingering habit of strain and tension blocks flow state from arising, and blocks reading from feeling easy, no matter how much practice they've gotten.
Chances are if you’ve read more than 15-20 novels worth of Japanese, you should be able to relax, look at the parts of a sentence and notice your brain naturally coming up with the accurate meaning and reading most of the time, without feeling like you have to squeeze it out of yourself.
Any strain is usually only necessary to make sense of things that are new to you (for example stopping to look up a new word, seeing how it fits in the sentence). And even that can be done with an orientation of open curiosity to learning something new, rather than of strain and brute force.
I challenge you to try it. The next time you’re about to read or listen to anything in Japanese, check that your body (shoulders, neck, jaw, eyes) feel relaxed, take some deep breaths, and then patiently get a feel for the sweet spot of least effort necessary to comprehend the text (or audio) accurately. If you have a decent amount of experience with native input already, I think you'll find that most of the time, most of the knowledge required to comprehend without struggling is already there in you from past experience, so you can just relax a bit and get used to letting it arise naturally. In effect, training yourself to read more like you do in your native language.

focus mostly on memorizing word readings, you’ll establish and retain meaning better during immersion. create mnemonics for the readings you’re struggling with, the stupider and more nonsensical the better. for example, for 暴れる I came up with “the music of Abba (あば) makes me act violently”. dumb, but it gives you both the reading and the meaning.

the dictionary is showing how its used and narrowing down the usages to a specific meaning to better explain them, but that doesn't necessarily mean that なる itself means 20 different separate things
the word itself has a fundamental meaning which is WHY it is used in those ways, and it's extremely obvious to understand how this came to be
your example >>38973766 here clearly at its most fundamental meaning is something like "the aeolian islands becomes from 7 volcanic islands" i.e. in the thing known as the aeolian islands comes into being from the existence of 7 volanic islands

you should. those are no different than looking up words with yomichan or looking up grammar points. they're just one of the cheating methods that facilitate learning the language. see http://how-to-learn-any-language.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=39069

what you shouldn't do is read the translation without making an attempt at deciphering the sentence (and you should also always try to "reverse-engineer" the sentence after viewing the translation). but this caveat applies to all cheating methods. for example, you shouldn't look up a word in a dictionary before making an attempt at recalling what it means.

it can sometimes be translated to "is" because english "become" wouldn't be used in the same situation because of the way english works (e.g. literally translating 参考になる as "become something that can be of use as a reference" or simply "become a reference" when you are trying to say "i hope this is useful to you" or whatever wouldn't be acceptable)

japanese grammar is so fuckin easy you really just need to know what the particles do and the verb forms -u -te -ta -tai with their -masu equivalents and know about -teiru, then later on you can have a look at -zu and -nu
that's it everything else that's being touted as "grammar" is really just vocab
compare that to latin or ancient greek with their dozens of verb forms and cases an absolute nightmare

it's not related to language tho it's about the idea, what you're saying is that the idea of it becoming doesn't make sense. it's easy, if something was in a certain state before and then it changed and that's what you're talking about and not what it currently is, then that's become, but if you're talking about what it is then it's is, simple.

it's a different entry for a different kanji it doesn't mean that meanings for words with the same kanji are all derived from the same place or that they mean the same thing, which they obviously don't unless you're willing to do olympic level mental gymnastics to say that 'become' instead of the more straight forward 'made up of'

combat is much less tedious while being much more precise, in sekiro you ARE A NINJA, if you play tight you just slay most things instantly, even bosses, essentially things have a parry/counter meter and if you drain it, you insta kill them, they also have regular health that works as in souls, so you can play it as souls, or if you can dodge/parry everything, you just breeze through, its harder than it sounds.
