People just throw their trees into water, and even if they put some form of nutrients in it, it's for nothing.

A tree REQUIRES a large amount of light (no, christmas tree lights are not sufficient (most of them aren't even in the right wavelength). A tree also requires the humid outdoors, or they will quickly dessicate and die (a typical house is at 20% or lower humidity).
A plant also needs roots to transport nutrients upwards through the xylem up into the leaves. Even then, land plant root systems are notoriously inefficient, you'd require mycorrhizal fungi in your plant nutrient mix, which wouldn't work in water or in the absence of roots either. Essentially the tree's dead as a doornail as soon as it hits the ground.
