when i was brand new i fucking hated kanji, but now that i'm actually somewhat capable of reading i find it annoying when something is all hiragana. like i don't even wanna play paper mario because of how sparse kanji is, it feels like a chore to read.

It's been years and I still can't speak. I do anki pretty regular, I just can't commit to immersion. I haven't got faith that watching shows I can't understand will eventually lead to me understanding Japanese. Then again, I don't know if sentence decks are helping much either. I can't get past the boredom of not understanding anything. I get a bit more enjoyment out of reading, so I'm considering getting a Switch and some Japanese language VN's. Are there are particularly good games n that platform for learning, preferably slice of life stuff.

I'm pretty desperate to start feeling some sense of progress and to be able to understand Japanese beyond young childrens books and text books.

Why does everyone recommend starting with a vocab deck or studying vocab? Vocabulary is the easiest thing to pick up during immersion. Grammar is the thing that requires specific study as an adult to really get, you do not pick up grammar via immersion easily at all.
We should be telling beginners to start with like a grammar anki deck to drill grammar structures and to not waste any time doing a core 2k deck or whatever, because they will just pick up all that vocab during their immersion much more quickly than they ever would with a core vocab deck. The same is not true for grammar and grammar structures.
