Because it veers dangerously close to fanfiction, and the tidal wave of crap that composes most of it. It's also far too easy to just do it yourself, as everyone needs to develop their writing skill at some point or another. If you have someone else do it, you wind up seeing all the things that you would have done differently, automatically making the request a failure.

Those artworks and concept sketches are great, but they're result from years of practice of western cartoon art: animation with high frame rate and focus to action makes the industry venerate for fluid, dynamic look with clear and obvious expressions for the characters. The drawing also has to become effective representation of various human being from race, build, and various social economic classes. Typical of US when it comes to diversity.

Meanwhile, only in eastern or specifically Japanese modern visual culture that you got static, tranquil look. There's no huge bias toward having to learn all those basic /western/ arth fundamental so the entry are much more casual. For subjects, their industry are more lenient toward fanworks so reproducing (lolcopyrighted) characters or visual style in your own interpretation is fine or even encouraged. So choosing which character to depict and what they do has more importance.

I enjoy the latter ofc. But the best thing an artist could do is to take everything that inspires him/her personally from any style and ideology, even from obsolete past tradition, and adapt it to modern context.

Tl;dr worshiper of ugly gaijin art should die

What. Way to generalize everything. Fluidity doesn't occur only in animation. Learning the ropes of drawing isn't deeply rooted in one culture or the other. Even shitty "how to draw manga" books will try to use realism as a foundation.

Besides, "tranquil" doesn't mean "lifeless". Line, color, contrast, composition, and a ton of other stuff can bring life to a picture. It's not necessarily what's occurring in the picture that defines if there's life in a picture or not. But if you don't understand the fundamentals of any, you won't be able to utilize it effectively.

There are definitely anime influences in some of the sketches.

But that's what makes the artist well-rounded.

Stuff such as form is universal. It's not exclusive to GAIJIN artists or anything. Like the image of the back-view guy walking - it looks good, and isn't really deeply rooted in one style or the other.

Fluidity also is not only part of one style. Seeing the flow of human movement, or the flow of composition is universal.

Even if an an image is just made "to look cool", a grasp of the basics are needed to make a "cool" image look cooler.

'Ton of other stuff' is overrated. Even uneducated or children's drawing can bring life to a picture, just relying on reflex and natural feel. >'Ton of other stuff' is overrated.
I disagree. If anything, it's underrated. You can get by without them, and most people are satisfied with that, but most aren't aware of how greatly they can help. It isn't really my place to butt in and say they HAVE to learn the stuff though. If they just want to doodle, that's okay.

>Even uneducated or children's drawing can bring life to a picture, just relying on reflex and natural feel.
I agree to a point. But learning just the basics will help flesh out what they intended to draw in the first place. Most can not draw as well as their minds can imagine, and that's largely because they don't know HOW to go around drawing what they want to draw. They usually can sort of get an idea on the paper, but it's rarely results that are as good as they'd like.

>You don't need to learn literally everything before you can transform a message into picture your intended audience in this small culture could receive.

Be careful there. I see too many sample of westerner (or western wannabe)'s arrogance for forcing their western art tradition as 'universal'. Is anything universal should be revered?

Color as one of the element of visual fundamental for example; red is universally thought as symbol of love, excitement, courage or danger. Disregarding the cultural interpretation of it as festivity and good luck in Chinese etc. I hate my arths professor for being asshole like this.

In the end my conclusion is to draw whatever you want and like, and learn from fundamentals only when you're interested. Sure is DevianTart faggotry but it's better than whining endlessly that you can't draw or shit.

Should you rely on the basics? ie Do the whole starting with a circle thing and drawing all the guide lines.

It's recommended for beginners because it forces you to acknowledge the volume and space of the figure in whatever pose you choose, and it also lets you know when you don't know how a certain pose works.

Some pros can work without construction lines because they can visualize enough of the image beforehand, but even the pros use guidelines.

You should, it can only help you get better. I rarely use guidelines, so my improvement is very slow. I often end up drawing poses that are stiff, awkward, or just physically impossible.
