How do I know whether a kana is the start of a new word, or if its a particle for the previous word? Like how do I know whether なんかにいる is supposed to be 'nanka nii ru', or whether it's 'nanka-ni iru'? Can I just trust jisho and yomichan to figure this out, or do I need to figure it out myself?

And is なんか a verb, or a noun?

Why hasn't somebody made a puzzle game where you're piecing together the meaning of Japanese sentences in English?

Greetings from /int/'s DJT.
You guys seem to be really into anki, which seems odd to me. I've been at it for about 19 months, and I only do 10 new words a day in anki at the most, often doing fewer or none. I feel like 90% of the new words I see (I do sentence mining) I either have a vague idea of what they mean thanks to my immersion, or can just easily infer mostly from the kanji + the rest of the sentence.
So what's even the point of wasting time with anki when a ton of immersion will get you better results?

こと (事) can act as a nominalizer, it can make noun clauses from verb clauses. so take a normal sentence: 先生は～を言っている = the teacher is saying ~. you can mold that into a noun clause with こと 先生の言っていること = what the teacher is saying. now you can use this like a normal noun 先生の言っていることがわかるかい? ＝do you understand what the teacher is saying?

Haven't you ever heard of the chinese room experiment? It's a philisophical thought experiment that simply, logically, and conclusively proves that kanjis CAN'T have meaning. You should be able to figure that out without using that particular experiment though.

Just think of how normal kids learn to read. They just naturally know the word "cat" (unless something bad happened when they were born), and then once they learn the alphabet, they can see that the letters "CAT" make the word cat.

Now consider how the japanese kid "learns to read". They know the word "neko" which is supposedly written as 猫, but there's no way to tell that. We're just supposed to believe that it magically means cat.
