Guide: https://learnjapanese.moe/

be sure to read John's religion/story
>How I got 180/180 on N1 in ~8.5 Months!
https://rentry.org/9pe4o

But essentially what John's method religion IS:

* Start reading every day (and listening)
* Go through a grammar guide (like Tae kim or Cure Dolly)
* Go through a common vocab deck (like core2.3k)
* Mine stuff into Anki that you encounter in your Japanese media

A detailed guide of what John did can be found on
https://pastebin.com/0ANbbfHR

*John Bless your gains

Disregard bad advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・any геddiт """guides""". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, coin miner, confusing for beginners.
・tatsumoto. It recommends targeted sentence cards, which are proven to be less effective than words cards(animecards).
・Ankidrone Starter Pack. It is based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Core 2.3k instead.
・Tatsumoto. Tatsumoto is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
He isn't an honest person. He is a hypocrite who promotes the exact opposite of what he does.
・Matrix/Telegram. Matrix is malware that runs a data mining operation. DJT has moved to Signal.
・Refold, Migaku and other for-profit companies who want to scam you.
・Namefags, don't waste your time with Attention Whores

how could 4chan be redesigned to be sperg-proof?
by this, I mean preventing people from degrading the thread by changing OPs to suit their agenda, or spamposting their "guides" and links

4chan primarily relies upon the userbase to maintain the quality of threads by actively resisting these things (e.g. racing to be the first to create the new thread [not reliable], responding to shill/spam posts calling them out [a newcomer will not be able to tell who is right])
essentially, it becomes a war of endurance to see who gets tired of defending their position first, where the more autistic or interested person eventually wins

banter is fine, but some anons try to actually hurt each other and thats... i dunno, i don't think its good, even in r9k, hell, even in pol, people generally try to be nice to each other.

basically just when you read, focus on understanding each sentence in the story in a meaningful, impactful way, rather than focusing on "learning new words" or other abstract language learning goals. first try to understand the sentence to the best of your current ability without looking up anything at first. then when you get to the end of the sentence, look up a any new words you weren't sure about. your objective when looking up should be "let this be the puzzle piece that allows me understand this sentence in a meaningful way", not "must memorize this words asap"
the magic is that words just start sticking after only a few lookups (sometimes only 1 or 2) as you do this because our brain naturally absorbs new language when we comprehend messages that feel impactful or interesting.

>> No.38855300

when japanese learning is ever brought up it's never "have you done your 3hrs of reading today" it's "bro your reps???". pointing out that the focus on anki is misguided is not anti anki. if someone used a pre-built deck and did 1k reps a day, they'd be worse than the guy who does 0 reps and reads for 4 hours a day.

who's talking about 100% immersion all the time? consume enough to come across common words within a month. if you can't do that you cannot learn japanese in the first place.

>not everyone has good memory to get acquainted with a lot of words in such a short time and it's harder to remember words when you're a beginner
if you've matured the card in anki you should have it in your brain for the duration of the next interval if you don't that would defeat the entire point of doing anki because you'd fail every single rep lol

>the frequency of words change depending on the type of media you consume
this is very true but we are talking about core words the vast majority of which are common across all forms of media. and if a word absolutely refuses to show up in what you consume it is simply not relevant to you at the moment. you can always pick up the scraps later by branching out in what you read and watch once you're better at nihongo.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have
been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly
increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in
“advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society,
have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings
to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and
have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The
continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human being to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world,
it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical
suffering even in “advanced” countries.

probably true, i started watching anime without subs in late 2012 because i couldn't be bothered to wait 3 hours for the subs to come out. i vividly remember watching hataraku maou-sama and sitting there for minutes on end when they'd speak in the made up language with jsubs. 8 years later when mushoku did the same thing, i was able to read it with ease. we have come a long way and it not for a moment felt like study or required "willpower".

The only useful tip I got from this guide were the thing about the dictionaries, the other stuff is something that you find on the internet anyway. The main difference is that he tells you "noooo stop using textbooks, watch animu and read shitty novels"

Because Anki is mostly for Kanji readings, no one has ever acquired a word from Anki. Also, at some point you are expected to break free from bilingual dictionaries.
Also, it's not like it's impossible to describe Japanese concepts in English. Imabi and Cure dolly for example are good English resources. Textbooks are more concerned with getting you prepared for tests like JLPT than to actually teach the complex concepts correctly.

Serious question: Is there even a point in learning Kanji in their purest form instead of just studying the actual vocabs that are commonly used? I could understand advancing a level further after you've been studying for 5+ years, but there are lots of people who tell you to study radicals and kanji in isolation. Is there a point in that?

it might but less than you think, the first 2k words are all so common that you will constanly encounter them so it wont really be a problem
>I primarily like reading manga and there's one streamer I'd like to listen to, are those two things a good alternative to reading LN? Immersion-wise i mean
as long as its comprehensible all input is good, the problem with manga is that a lot of it has furigana so you will ignore the kanji (its like watching a movie with subtitles in a language you know, its hard not to look at them) but dont worry about that if you are just starting, most people start reading manga because reading the furigana is better than not reading at all
once you feel you have a decent amount of vocab or after you finish the deck, whatever happens first, try to eventually start reading not furigana stuff, that can be manga with no furigana or novels or vinnies or whatever you find

Make sure it's the current version of the test, memorize the 900 or so answers (don't have to be perfect) and take the test. I promise on everything that net+ is useless in actual application and learning with OJT will be infinitely more useful to you, getting your foot door is the most important aspect of making it in IT.

google translate's or line's kanji recognition tool work fine even if you don't know stroke order

i've never used a radical to look anything up either i had the kanji as copyable text or i just drew it
radicals might be useful for looking stuff up if you live in the 1980s and only have a paper dictionary available

vocab is sufficient, but rtk can help in the very beginning when all kanji still look the same to you
personally i think the ideal way is to do a bit of rtk, like 200 characters or so
this will give you a feel for differences between similar looking kanji, the way they can encompass meaning/symbolism, and stroke order principles
all of these things are useful but there's diminishing returns on this stuff and it will absolutely not help you to actually read out words in a text, that you will learn by memorizing vocab and watching and reading japanese for multiple thousands of hours
