Here's my theory, which may well be completely wrong and disproved in the next chapter or two:

When Suika says that "it hurts to have beans thrown at you," she doesn't necessarily mean that roasted basedbeans (still) hurt oni like folklore and legends suggest or anything, but that it sucks to be the scapegoat of human society.

It sucks to be ostracized for being different, for being supposedly wicked by nature. Time and time again we've seen how Suika mostly just kinda wants to hang out with others and have fun.

In WaHH Suika is asked by Reimu to "play the role of the oni", but in being invited to play this role and participating in the festivities herself she is actually the exact opposite of the "wicked oni" that is supposed to be driven out. That's why she's sad when no one wants to play with her at first and so happy when Kasen salvages it by turning it into a snowball fight.

This ties into Suika taking inspiration from the mythological oni Shuten-Douji, who was according to some tales abandoned by his mother and ousted from society because of the way he looked and the things he could do practically as soon as he was born. He was born to human parents, but wasn't accepted by humans. It's gotta suck.

The way Suika speak in Lotus Eater seems like she want to imply something, like the meaning of setsubun beyond just getting physically harmed, in line with the manga's (a bit) more serious tone.

My theory is that it is a matter of perspective. In the games Reimu is very different from the several manga Reimus; in the games she is the youkai exterminator and is seen as such by everyone else, while for example in WaHH she is impulsive and kind of dumb because Kasen sees her as essentially a child. In the left image there we see Suika from the perspective of Reimu and Marisa, a playful, cheerful girl fairly agreeable to humans. While in the right image we are shown the Suika that Aya, Miyoi and Mamizou, i.e. other yokai, see. And they see her nature as a yokai, specifically oni, who surely hates roasted beans and all that.

So while I feel like this kind of characterization is not new or strange for ZUN, it does not really shed any new light on Suika as a character. This >>38805720 is however a more interesting idea so I'm hoping for it.

Minor correction, in the legends the hierarchy usually goes Shuten-Douji/Ibuki-Douji, then Ibaraki-Douji, and then the four devas.
Either way, Touhou flattens it down to just the four devas, with Ibuki and Ibaraki as part of them. So between Suika, Kasen, and Yuugi, there's only space for one more.

Nothing in the game says Megumu got roped in Tsukasa's scheme.
While the profile does says whoever listen to her advice will be ruined, it also says ONLY Chimata and Momoyo that got roped in to fight Reimu, while Megumu's dialogue suggest that she's also driving along the plan.
Chimata and Momoyo also recognize Tsukasa as Megumu's servant, which is in line with what they are based on.

It should be noted that the ending speculates this could either be due to her dishonesty or optimism, but then attributes the reason to "Reimu's ability". In fairness, that could be implying that Reimu's determination or charisma or something convinced Suika to not kidnap people, but it doesn't add up. I'm not sure what the line is implying:

After all in actuality Suika, having not met Reimu at all, returned to Gensokyo and threw parties to entice humans and youkai to intermingle. Her actions imply a naive optimism indeed, since her goal was to make Gensokyo fun and bring oni back.
But, she won't kidnap humans.

The final bit is thus referring either to her failure, or to how she won't kidnap people, in either case attributing it to Reimu's ability to resolve incidents, basically.
I don't know what ZUN intends, therefore. Given all of Suika's actions show her unusual fondness for humanity, how she's described as a bit of an aberrant case, and how the text is using language that seems to refer to Reimu's skill at resolving conundrums after mentioning that Suika failed, I'd GUESS this means "Suika failed to bring oni back because of Reimu" and not "Suika will not kidnap humans because of Reimu"

Unfortunately Japanese discussion on this aspect is minimal. I found two results, with two interpretations.
It's worth mentioning I've never seen fanworks showing Suika as a kidnapper or maneater, however. Not in canon either of course. Furthermore that's significant considering many other characters, including Kasen, unabashedly mention killing/eating humans

No, that's literally your headcanon. Nothing so far has ever implied change or mellowing of Suika. Rather Yuugi is supposedly jealous about Suika's unchanging sense of freedom. As for Kasen it's said all of her malice was in her arm, ergo it's not that she was beaten that changed her it's that her malice was literally cut out of her.

Suika also has never claimed to hold the same philosophical views as Kasen. Kasen seems to think Gensokyo is bad, humans need protection, and that her oni heritage is shameful. Suika loves Gensokyo (and is friends with its main creator, whereas Kasen can't stand Yukari), punches humans, and adores her oni heritage. Furthermore Kasen unabashedly ate humans, which is what I was talking about, which is counter to how supposedly Suika is canonically uninterested in even kidnapping them.
And again, Suika is allegedly a weirdo by oni standards. Kasen also seems to dislike her for whatever reason.

The closest you could say is that the massacre of mount ooe is implied to have occurred since Suika has a spell card for it, but that's also not a definite sign of anything in particular. The only things we know are that oni left the above ground because humans were deceitful. It's also not even implied oni eat humans until the end of WaHH for what it's worth. Like Akyuu only warns that you could get kidnapped

Basically we're shown that people who drink from the cup get a LOT more violent and aggressive than the oni we know of in Touhou. Like, there are violent oni, but they're usually chill and genial. Kasen even immediately assumes that after drinking from it, Reimu and Marisa must have become "rude". And, of course, if you make a full recovery from drinking it you fully turn into an oni.
My theory is that Kasen is so excessively malicious and bloodthirsty because the Ibaraki cup overinflated her "oni" traits by making her particularly terrible, probably from having received and healed from some life-threatening injury in the ancient past.

It's made pretty clear that "Suika" was a name she adopted later. So, that Suika is uninterested in kidnaping people doesn't mean the same was true of her back when she was Shuten.

She's weird mostly because she's very Oni like, but without any of the violence and evil. Kasen finds her too boorish, and most other Oni find her too weak.

Also, and this is completely headcanon, I imagine Kasen still has some grievances left over from their days on Mt Ooe. In some versions of the story they were even husband and wife, meaning there could be a ex thing going on.

How about the first thing I quoted, the narrator saying Suika doesn't kidnap humans? You're saying "it's not true back then", but the text never implied "Suika nowadays etc etc", it instead says she's a strange oni who doesn't do things like the others. How do you read that and get "she must be typical, then"? Rather her weirdness is also why she's up on the surface in the first place, and canonically the oni (who until Kasen weren't known to kill people in Touhou lore) had left due to being killed repeatedly when trying to play games and chill. Despite this betrayal, Suika is the only one who still tries to make friends with humans again. Worth noting that I don't think you should take the case of the oni to be entirely sympathetic as they DID kidnap people, whether Suika kidnapped people or not she at least allowed it (as she was one of the mountains rules), and it's super likely that at the VERY least, Kasen aside, oni killed humans accidentally during their "games".
Personally for point 2 as someone who thinks Suika won't bring harm to humans herself, I figure she's really just a freedom champion above all else. She does what she wants to do and lets other oni do what they want to do, even if that's kidnapping people. As someone who values freedom, she won't kidnap humans/put them in cages, but she won't stop another oni from doing that if they want to/the human can't stop it. At any rate oni clearly value freedom with the plain and present "shackled to nothing" motif they all possess.

False actually. The name she used to go by was Ibuki, and you'd probably guess Ibuki Suika. This is known since Yukari changed history and named the constellation Orion after her with the name Ibuki.
This is mentioned in both CoLA (c22) and WaHH (c25)

it's probably worth noting that Shuten(-douji) is a nickname, which means it can still possibly be A name that Suika possessed. It means "child who drinks" and I mean, yeah? That's definitely her. Shuten was born on Ibuki, so Ibuki-douji would mean Ibuki-child, which leads Suika, being the Ibuki Kid, to probably being Shuten, but regardless the legends about her in regards to Touhou lore are ambiguous.

It's generally a good idea to not assume things based on myths, since Touhou diverges from mythology quite often, mainly using it as a basis rather than a canon.
