If I were you, I'd get a job over here. Hostel might be okay, but I bet the pay is trash. At the very least you should be able to get a tap dancing monkey English teacher job. Then you can live over here for a year or two, by that point you'll have gotten the infatuation out of your system and you can decide whether or not to live here. As a bonus, you'll experience what it's like to live in Japan while poor. It can be pretty shitty. This should help you make a good decision.

I'd avoid getting married and having a family over here. Japanese women change completely after getting married and then even more so after kids. My wife has a different outlook so it works for us, but most women here are more parochial in their thinking.

As far as finding your place, you probably won't. You Will Never Be Japanese, as they say. It's hard to make friends here, much harder than in your home country. If you can get over that, you might make it. I've leaned into being a gaijin. I don't speak keigo, I don't do all the weird little cultural rituals. But I'm good natured and friendly. Japanese people seem to like that because I fit their mental model of "gaijin" so they know how to treat me. It might sound patronizing, but... You Will Never Be Japanese. That's just how it is.

I live in Japan, and it fucking sucks. I made a thread about this a lonnnng time ago, but this bears repeating.

1. Anime and manga are more expensive in Japan. The prices are ridiculous, and it's hard for me to justify buying anime even though I feel it's important for fans to make an effort to support the industry.

2. If you are a girl, you will be groped and treated like shit. I have had men grab my ass in public *7* different times in the past year and a half. My Japanese friends say that women should just grit their teeth and bear it, since if you try to do something about it you will be publicly shamed. I also feel dirty and pathetic when these incidents occur.

3. Office culture in Japan is...intense. You are expected to show up at social gatherings even if you do not want to. And at these social gatherings people have the EXACT SAME CONVERSATIONS AGAIN AND AGAIN. I've had like 50 conversations on the power of beer to refresh you after a day's work. You have to say "good morning" every day in a very specific way, and if you don't then someone will approach you and tell you that's not how things are done at company XYZ.

4. The people treat gaijin like shit. Even the ones who try to be nice come across as condescending and rude by American standards. There are also a large number of Japanese men who think gaijin women are sluts and that they can get you to open your legs at the drop of a hat. Fuckers.

I used to fantasize about living in Japan and then I realized I was just running away into escapist fantasy. In reality, wherever you're from is probably not that bad and you also have a greater chance at building a fulfilling life from where you are. However if you want to step out of your comfort zone and you feel like you need to live in Japan then please do try your hardest at making it reality. It will be difficult and you will have to ask yourself the question of whether it is worth it.

It's kind of a meme and kind of not. The biggest problem with living in Japan is that "Things are they way they are because that's the way things are". So there's a massive cultural inertia that no one is interested in fighting even though if it's kind of shit. I'm American and I spent 3 years in Japan, 2 of them in Waseda University and 1 year working. In Uni it was weird because everything felt hyper clique-y like there were social groups and you weren't really allowed to deviate from them unless there was a reason, also there's the very Japanese habit of just yelling at you till you do what they say. Like one time I talked to a girl for a bit, just idle chat and later 4 guys cornered me and started yelling at me that I should leave her alone. I'm like "Who are you?" but they wouldn't say just kept shouting, so I picked one of them up, moved him to the side and just walked away while they shouted at me to come back. It was bizarre because I'm used to the American "Don't talk to my girl" followed by punch to the gut vs Japan's "Don't talk to that girl I'm not dating, or related to or even friendly with". It was just really weird.

Job wise, there's tons of slacker jobs if you're not working in customer service. My part time was working in a print shop 4 days a week, while there was tons of hustle days there was also a lot of days where I'm just shredding bad prints while watching anime on my phone. After I graduated I got another job at a bigger print shop as an engineer, that was fun. I also hate to say it, while it's not great the English teacher route is a great way to stay in the country with free rent while you're job hunting. Buys you a year or two and you can keep searching.

Dating wise, the biggest issue is that weebs want to date a Japanese Girl NOT a Japanese Girl that's good for them. So they ignore all the massive red flags and forgive every act of selfishness because "Muh pure Nihon Waifu is just being cute" then 5 years later "Oh no my wife divorced me and she's taking the kids since I'm not a JP citizen I have no rights, what do I do?" and I'm like Mother fucker we all knew your wife was a bitch 5 years ago why are you just finding out now? Also why the hell did you not start the process of citizenship once your wife was pregnant? When you're dating everyone lies, you try to be the best version of yourself and fudge the gap with little lies but if you're not aware that someone is lieing at all you're just going to have heartbreak.

Also one more thing: When you go to Japan, you're not Japanese and never will be. Period. Full Stop. So you'll encounter the most refreshing form of racism you've ever seen where it's never aimed directly at you but it's aimed around you. Also, random students may come up and speak random languages at you if you look approachable while hanging out doing nerd stuff. I learned more French in Japan than I ever did in school.

When I was in Japan it caused me to go overboard for like 2 months then I couldn't stand the sight of anime then I readjusted myself. It was a long process but my room was no longer filled with just random anime junk. Manga is dirt cheap though. I'm also wondering if anyone has anything to say about this. Maybe it's frowned upon here, but if I'd move to Japan it would be for the sole purpose of immersing myself in the heart of otaku culture - ideally working within it - and taking everything else in passively. Are the otaku really as bad as the normalfags?

I've always thought about moving to Japan, probably some small town in Hokkaido, and working as an electrician, since that's the skillset I already have, but I love my family and I don't want to leave them behind, when god only knows what could happen if I left. I also had a thought about taking the fifteen thousand dollars I have ready as a down payment for a house, and going to live in Japan for a year, paying my rent with said money, and maybe working part time to pay for food and whatever other things I want to buy. That's simultaneously more and less reasonable, because a year is plenty long enough to grow as a person and get some great experiences, but I really need that money to buy a house, and no matter what my plan is for going to Japan, I need to learn Japanese first. Some days I really think about it, and I do want to go for a couple weeks when COVID is over, but I don't think I'll ever move there for real.

I will also never be German despite living in Germany. It doesn't mean you can't become part of the community, but it takes effort an time. Partially voluntary association is how people anywhere bond. Usually people do this through school or work and if they have kids through their activities. Clubs, such as choir or football, are also a good way to associate. The key is to be sociable and to speak the language. Being foreign puts you 5 points behind, because you miss the bonds from growing up there, but it's not unsurmountable. Or you don't give a fuck and just live a solo life, which has its charm too. I lived in Japan for only 7 months and it was lovely despite not integrating.
