3871303 No.3871303 [Reply] [Original]

This game... just finished it... Fucking fantastic final ending. Everything came together in the end, and all those bittersweet endings Takeshi sacrificing himself to save Tsugumi, anyone? accumulated into something wonderful. Even though there were some stretches of possibilities, i.e. Takeshi coming back to life after sitting in the bottom of the ocean for a few minutes under 12.5 atmospheres of pressure and managing to swim back, intact, pretty much fine or BW sinking 300+ feet without getting killed from the pressure difference or suffocation etc., it was still perfect in my eyes. Just wow... I cried girly tears throughout Tsugumi's ending and the true end, and I don't cry easily.

I need some more VNs that are on this level (that are translated), any suggestions? I'm a newcomer to VNs, so all I've played were Ever17, Princess Waltz, Fate/stay night, and Yume Miru Kusuri.

TLDR: Recommend me some excellent VNs better or on-par with Ever17, preferably with a non-pedestrian romantic theme (i.e. fantasy like FSN, sci-fi like Ever17, etc.)

I wouldn't really say "better" because that invites shistorms. Ever17 is a personal favourite of many, ranking it against other games just pisses people off.

Most of the best ones are too long and hard to translate...I've been waiting years for Muv-Luv to come out. :(

As a fellow fan of Ever17, I'd recommend against Cross Channel and Sharin no Kuni.

Both have tremendously low amounts of character-between-character interaction and the relationships between each were pretty much non-existent unlike in Ever17.

I'll probably play the game at some point, I've already seen the anime and I hear its quite similar to the VN in many respects (- deus-ex-machina, of course).

I was browsing around and Chaos;Head looked interesting, how is it?

>> No.3871424

Off of the top of my head, VNs with "non-pedestrian romantic themes:"

Sharin - dystopian society
Cross Channel - infinity loop with the socially disordered
Higurashi - infinity loop with the clinically insane
Umineko - Your family got killed in a murder mystery cliche. Are you a bad enough dude to beat witches in MAGIC CLUE?
CLANNAD - wish granting other world
Phoenix Wright - Court with horrible law system
Phantom of Inferno - Guns and mafia
Kira Kira - dude in an all-girls punk rock band

OP here, didn't see this post till I already posted.

Thriller, mystery, mindscrew but the ending turns into lolmatrix. Still a great 10 hours of Nitro+ though.

Ignore the anime's existence.

As a fellow fan of Ever17, I'd recommend Cross Channel and Sharin no Kuni.

Both have tremendously great amounts of character-between-character interaction and the relationships between each were pretty much great like in Ever17.

I lol at the people complaining about the Clannad "deus ex machina" ending. The game always had a fantasy feel to it, and it definitely made the game more memorable.

>>3871454

That's fine with me but my problem with it is that the characters barely talk amongst themselves. Most of the character interaction in it is only between the MC and the other characters. Without the MC, the VN would probably have less than 50 lines of dialogue.

This game makes me sad in a way.

It can only be truly enjoyed the first time you read it, unspoiled. The sheer "Holy crap" factor just isn't there a second time. :(

>> No.3871526

>>3871472
Cross Channel and Sharin's characters don't have as many interlocking relationships as Ever17; characters are not so important outside of their own stories.
However, I feel that Ever17's characters were pretty weak individually compared to some of Cross Channel and Sharin's characters.

>> No.3871528

>>3871508
That is what makes it such a great game,

I cannot play Oracle of Time anymore, merely because there is nothing gained from finding that last room in the Water Temple, or saving some princess.

But what makes me smile at KID and Nintendo in both of these respects, is that they have released semi-unrelated sequels, which allow me to experience the feeling of a compelling story through game.

>> No.3871533

honestly no other VN i've played had such an amazing sense of satisfaction in the conclusion compared to Ever17.
I'd say another good one to play would be Tsukihime. Some of the routes overlap a bit too much in my opinion (arc/ciel, hisui/kohaku), but it's nowhere as bad as it was in Ever17, which was the one thing that bugged me about the game.

>> No.3871539

>>3871508
Reread the beginning of Kid's route.
You'll start to notice things you missed.

>> No.3871578

One bonus of Cross Channel and Sharin is that they're both fairly linear, so you don't have to keep ctrl-ing through read text or reload saves and what not.
In Cross Channel, the game loops back whenever you reach a bad ending or complete a mini route.
In Sharin, the game is broken down into five chapters, each of which has a satisfying quasi-conclusion to its story.

>>3871424
seconding phantom of inferno. The format is kind of annoying but the voiced narration really adds to the experience a lot IMO. It also makes it almost stupefyingly long to play through, since you're listening to everything at the VN's pace.

>I was browsing around and Chaos;Head looked interesting, how is it?

It's atmospheric, and has incredibly high production values. I'd say 99.9% of anons pretty much saw Takumi as basically themselves, but I doubt many people would sink as low as him.

The game was great at imitating life and was a ride of sheer terror up through on of the later chapters, I forgot which. When the actual plot was strung together it started to get shitty, it was at its best as a disjointed collection of random mindfuckery.

It also tries to imitate other visual novel plot devices. plb manages to hold up the deception for most of the game, but the writing weakens noticeably toward the end.

Route A ending was a great way to end it though (it's the same as the beginning). I never got to Route B due to the licensing faggotry. Was that ever translated? Is it worth going back and paying through all the hallucinations?
