So about a week ago I started studying japanese and it's been going well so far. I've done a lot of immersion and vocab + hiragana + katakana. The last few days something new started happening, when I wanted to study more japanese and was having a lot fun instead of saying "more more!" in english I said "もっともっと!" BUT I hadn't even learned that word from studying I just somehow knew it? Probably from all of the anime I've watched. Also today when I saw Ayato's (Genshin Impact character) leaks I said that's so かっこいい. That's so weird to me japanese has always been just the language I heard in anime but somehow I'm unconsciously starting to use it, feels pretty great.

2. see if I can guess the unknown word meaning from context
3. yomichan if no luck on all the words I dont know(a lot)
4. if the sentence doesnt make sense I drop it in deepL
5. if the sentence does makes sense I drop it in deepL anyway to say if I got it wrong

I just spam Yomichan on anything I don't immediately know. Even if I try to guess the meaning, I Yomichan to make sure I'm right. It takes approximately 0.5 seconds to do that, so it doesn't seem like that would really be inefficient at all compared to just guessing completely wrong about the meaning of a word.
Note I am also a beginner, though, so I'm not sure how good that really is.

Anime is a bit different because it is perceived differently than Western animation, even in the West. Most TV anime gets aired during late evening blocks these days, but the censorship is toned down much more as well. Western animation does remain conservative in that regard unless it is independent.

With acting in movie/TV shows, I think it's a wash outside of shows in the West which intentionally desexualize something to make a point. Plenty of scenes like that in some of the most popular series in the West, though things viewed as demeaning are usually written to be perceived as extremely negative, not so much in Japan. That butt slap would've probably been shown, but she would've reacted quite a bit differently unless there was a reason otherwise.

I think the biggest difference is in stuff like news reporting, weatherwomen, or other broadcast roles where there is probably some woman with better experience in that role, but experience is secondary to being eye candy - otherwise they would've likely hired a guy. Honestly most places still operate this way. If it's just an interview or something they're not going to avoid showing a woman because she's ugly.

The only thing I've found absolutely boneheaded is giving a rip how cute/waifu a politician is, which I've seen on 5ch (and 4chan).
