You think you've got YOURSELF to thank for being intelligent/good-looking/artistic/strong/etc.? No, you were given these qualities by your forefathers. And likewise, you were given their sins. You can't just take the good stuff and not make up for the bad. If your parents committed crimes, YOU are partly responsible.

And you folks always ignore the asswhooping the Japanese took in Manchuria just before they surrendered. The Soviets had as much, if not more, to do with Japan's surrender than the A-bombs.

Think about this for a moment- the number of people killed, mostly civilians, in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings was equivalent to MORE THAN 50% of the TOTAL US casualties in the ENTIRE war.

I don't think you'll find much disagreement that Japan had an ass-kicking coming, but it's tenuous at best to claim that the US decision to incinerate a few hundred thousand civilians in order to get at a couple minor military targets and "prevent further casualties" was reasonable or in any way justified. A big part of it was just to test the bombs in a real situation and demonstrate them to the Soviets in the gear-up for the Cold War.

Americans love to bitch about the skewed or revisionist history taught in other countries, but they rarely take more than a superficial look at what they're doing themselves.

Why does everyone insist that Japan was going to surrender? There's evidence they WEREN'T going to surrender, the preparation for a land invasion, the military overlords trying to keep the emperor under house arrest to prevent him from surrendering, even teaching children how to make bamboo spears to kill soldiers during a land invasion. You really have to ignore some very relevant aspects of history to conclude they were going to surrender.

Sure Truman was determined to drop the bombs regardless of what anyone said, sure much of the reason was to keep Russia out of Japan, sure it was to show the world the power of the atomic bomb, but the bulk of the reason was still to prevent the US from needing to make a land invasion that would cost millions of lives, would have included Russia, and would have split Japan into communist and democratic Japan.

Civilians? This was total war. Nobody was innocent unless they actively sought to end the war themselves. You work in a factory building bombs you're just as culpable as those who drop them. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were industrial centers that took part in the war effort. It was decided early on that 'civilians' on both sides were part of the war and with Japan's utter belief in the divinity of their emperor it's doubtful any of them didn't take part in the war directly or indirectly.

My grandfather built ceramics during the war, if his factory had the shit blown out of it and he died nobody would have screamed about killing innocents. Even as a civilian he was part of the war.

That's a whole new and special kind of bullshit. Show me the document where this was agreed to.

If it was agreed that civilians were fair game, please explain to me how and why people were tried and convicted for, among other things, acts of war against civilian populations during the Nuremburg and Tokyo War Crimes Tribunals.

And before you head down the victor's justice road, let me say the thing I love about that line of thinking is that no matter what your side did it was absolutely justified because everybody else was doing it too, but everybody else was purely evil and unjustified in their actions. The Japanese military conducting secret experimentation on captives in China makes it OK to kill 200,000 civilians who were unaware that such things were going on and, even if they would have been aware, were completely powerless to do anything about it? Should we slaughter 6 million German civilians to make up for the Jews too?

Japan's criminal actions during WWII, such as Unit 731, are totally inexcusable, but you don't punish one crime against humanity with another.

If you take into account that part of the reason the bombs were dropped on Japan was to test them in actual combat, it could be considered experimenting on civilian populations as well.

It's interesting to hear people attempt to claim the moral high ground in the war while at the same time advocating the mass murder of hundreds of thousands of people who had little or no knowledge of what was happening and no control over it whatsoever.

Bear in mind that Japan was NOT a democracy at that time, and nothing short of a full-scale civil war could have enabled citizens to put up any serious opposition to the war. By the time the US was involved, pretty much all of the anti-war protesters, political radicals, and others that posed a problem to the Japanese government had been jailed or executed. All anti-war movements were hastily and thoroughly crushed. Information was tightly controlled at all levels. This was not happy shiny fun time for everyday Japanese civilians. They either went on with their normal lives as much as they could, or they faced whatever punishment the government dealt out for their transgressions.
