the title of the table explains it, but to put it another way the number of words you'd have to come in contact with to have seen each word for the corresponding level enough times to have incidentally learned it, or an approximation in novels. for example, if you already have learned the first 4k words, then to reach the 5k level you'd have to read another 1,061,382 words or approximately 9 novels.

But just looking at the definitions they use for the series with the most words, a lot of the rare ones are compounds of simpler words (including nouns, verbs, particles, etc.). That should mess it up a bit.
