Yes it was.

There's only a certain amount of goodness available to all movies so when one movie is good it makes it so other movies can't get to the good it used up. So it becomes bad.

This movie is junkfood; a commercalized,paint-by-numbers melodrama mixed in with a flat action-adventure, that felt like nothing more than a table full of a producers brainstorming character ideas.

Agreed. Miyazaki is the Disney of Japan. It's easy to swallow consumer drivel that rarely challenges sensibilities. It's only so widely praised because the West is so woefully knowledgeable about Japanese animation, and will latch onto anything that shovels the kitschy "childhood sense of wonder" into their wrinkled bourgeois jowls. It's widely praised in Japan because the Japanese have shit taste in everything.
