be sure to read doth's story https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/l51r3d/my_500_day_journey_to_a_160180_n1_score_w_tips/

and jazzy's story https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/sedr0m/how_i_got_180180_on_n1_in_85_months/

A detailed guide of what they did can be found on
https://animecards.site/learningjapanese/

But essentially what it boils down to is:

* Start reading every day (and listening)
* Go through a grammar guide (like Tae kim)
* Go through a common vocab deck (like core2.3k)
* Mine stuff into Anki that you encounter in your Japanese media

Super useful tips: https://rentry.org/gitgud

kklc is like a 6k core deck and 2k kanji deck combined

do you really want to spend a whole year going through a premade deck

establish a system for accurately being able to write out kanji from memory

basically the guy that wrote kklc has no idea how to actually learn kanji here is the kklc method:

1. compare the kanji to similar kanji
2. go back and review the related kanji (the primitives) for every new kanji
3. learn the meaning and readings of the kanji (all the meanings) by using the vocab featured
4. practice writing it many times while focusing on the mnemonic story

this shit is going to take you years to do and goes completely against how to effectively memorize new information

Disregard bad advice frequently posted in these threads. Things to avoid:
・any rentry.org and геddiт """guides""". nothing good has ever come out of геddiт.
・Itazuraneko. Outdated, hard to follow, confusing for beginners.
・Anime cards (the guide by someone named QM). It recommends words cards, which are proven to be less effective than targeted sentence cards (TSCs).
・Core 2.3k. It is based on newspapers from early 90s and additionally sorted in a way that makes learning harder. Try Ankidrone Starter Pack instead.
・Anacreon. Anacreon is an infamous spammer. He constantly hijacks our threads to shill his shit.
・tmw/The moe way. Patreon scam run by a turkish tranny.
・Discord servers. Discord is malware that runs a data mining operation. DJT has moved to Matrix.
・Visual novels. Most of them are proprietary ー https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/

>a lot of radicals are barely used tho
yea that's the point
migaku only teaches you the ones that actually show up in the words you mined
so if you study the word 延々
it will first tell you to study 廴
then 正 if you haven't studied it yet
and then you study 延 alone

it seems like the most efficient way to study kanji for beginners

>>38578047
that's the point of migaku kanji god
it only shows you kanji and radical cards once you add the word to your anki not before.

have you ever considered that maybe you're not into japanese as much as you thought if you need to pay someone to force you into trying to learn it?
it's fucking easy btw all you have to do is learn kana some basic gramar and then consoom consoom consoom while looking shit up
all it takes is lots of time (thousands of hours in fact) and if you can't motivate yourself to spend that time a course isn't gonna do shit for you because
1. all it's gonna do is waste your time on useless shit like dissecting grammar explanations from genki
2. as soon as it ends you're going to go back to not caring about japanese and i presume you weren't planning to attend a course that's thousands of hours long which is the time you need to get good

tldr: you either want to learn japanese or you only """"want"""" to learn japanese and if you belong in the latter camp you cannot possibly make it and would be better off spending your time on something else

i've been playing guitar for 15 years and i still play almost every day because i just enjoy playing guitar
i don't see it as "studying" it's just something i do because it's fun
and the same goes for japanese, i enjoy reading japanese lns, manga, watching anime in japanese and do it every day, because it's fun
there's no forcing or "studying" involved here and if you can't get into that mindset you simply cannot keep up a skill over a long period of time

As a beginner, is N4 feasible by the end of the year? Since I’ll likely be starting private lessons soon, I want to have a clearly defined goal that is ambitious, yet still within my ability. Would skipping N5 and aiming for N4 level by the end of the year be doable? What about N3?

I get what you mean, but everytime I've tried that I end up falling back into porn because I'm so used to looking at porn while I masturbate. ultimately the problem is "me" (in some capacity), I get that. maybe I'll try it again though and see how it goes. I've only not beeing watching porn for a day, but I've been able to fight off my urges telling myself that nothing will change, that I will again feel a steep low after ejaculation.

Are there any college courses that you can take for Japanese that doesn’t require you to apply for college? Like just pay for the course itself without acting going to college to graduate?

I just want a more classroomy feel instead of just doing self study. I just can’t afford to actually go to college and I also don’t qualify to go yet as I’m not a high school graduate (I dropped out)

I’ve just no idea how to find things like this.

the methods come from here, but they post on reddit to get the most validation. they pretty much just using reddit to get as many people as possible to open up their minds about how japanese is actually learned.

the methods have evolved this way
antimoon > ajatt > djt > discord > leddit

leddit is the final resting place of the methods and the place to get most attention

you will only learn what your brain deems as needed for survival
the older you get, the more control you have over this process.
as your brain gets more efficient it becomes a filtering machine. it filters useless information so fast as an adult.
that's what makes learning language so difficult as an adult
because, you've trained your brain extremely diligently to focus in on your languages sounds and characters, it has become expert at discarding all the extra noise.

i don't think we can get back to the childlike state of an untrained brain.

that just means we have to learn japanese like our life depends on it.

children are surrounded by adults and other older kids who are constantly talking at them, mirroring them, responding to them, and giving feedback ("chee! chee!" "no honey that's a CHAIR").

they learn from having real, tactile, survival based experiences with the language every single day, continuously being reinforced by rewards ("gimme bottle!!!" "okay honey here you are") and are utterly surrounded by it in every area (family life, expressing needs, navigating their world, learning what different objects are). they literally NEED their L1 to survive so their brains naturally prioritize recognizing and mimicking the patterns as much as they can so they can navigate their literal lives.

how is this anything like a 25 year old, who has already learned to live and function just fine in their native language, sitting alone in their room with headphones on in a new language? we can not trick our brains into believing that watching peppa pig is vital for our survival and development as an adult human being. our brains know that being able to comprehend peppa pig is entirely OPTIONAL and not a real need whatsoever, so it's not going to expend the mental resources required to effortlessly pay minute attention to every movement and gesture and emotional tone to learn every clue of what every new sound might mean, organically all day every day like a child's brain does.

therefore as adults there has to be conscious effort put in to understand, at least up until the point where we can comprehend the majority, and you can't even resource a dictionary in order to get there without being able to read hiragana.

getting food is one crude example of a benefit language can confer. that one can obviously be met just by crying (albeit takes more time/trial and error). but a child's needs and desires become more complex as he grows, and without knowing how to speak the language of his caretakers those needs become less and less likely to be met. his brain quickly recognizes this and language becomes a major priority.

>>38582654
yeah exactly. so for a child his only option to consistently get what he wants and needs is learning his L1. whereas what an adult wants and needs is already entirely achievable in his L1.

>as long as an adult has a desire, he can do it
i don't disagree with that in a general sense. here's the thing though.
1. most guys still know at some level that they could get pussy in their native language, or without speaking japanese at all past like 5 words (many such cases)
2. learning how to seduce a girl is one very specific goal and only a small subset of situations will provide the language you need for that particular goal. so it likely won't translate to global fluency
3. most adult learners know that looking things up is a much quicker solution to understanding something than just hearing it 50 times in different contexts before it clicks, which is why they use dictionaries

>kids can relearn a second language until a certain age
thats true, and i think it also has to do with their brains generally still being in that acquisition mode orientation already from their L1. i'd say overall it's like this

when we're young our brains naturally figure out we need language to survive ->
therefore it is automatically very sensitive and tuned to the process of acquiring language ->
if there are multiple languages present in the child's environment then that process generalizes to all of them ->
once we hit the stage of development where we're able to get what we want and need and navigate our world (or at least are expected to be able to by our biology) then those acquisition mechanisms become dull and much less active.

>>38582763
kinda like i stated above, i wouldn't be surprised if having done it for more than one language as a kid teaches the brain at that age that there is generalizability to the process of language learning.

adult learners also talk about how getting fluent in their L2 made learning an L3+ feel easier. bilingual kids just get the upper hand at that, especially since they did it at a much more sensitive age so that understanding sunk in deeper

I'm a computer science undergraduate student and have been wanting to commit to studying Japanese as a hobby for the past year. The thing is, I'm worried that investing a few hours a day may take valuable time that I could've invested into working on my programming skills and knowledge, especially since I already work out and do some light gaming on the side. However, on the other side of the spectrum, I'm thinking that learning Japanese can prevent me from burn out from working on side projects and taking lots of CS courses in my efforts to catch up (I was undecided for a year and started my major late).

For reference, I'm currently taking 6 courses this semester (with one of them being a Saturday course on Android Development and has no bearing on grade or credit). I'm also working on a group club project, and have been thinking of starting Web Development.

The options I'm currently thinking of are the following:
- Try to invest an hour every day into studying except for Wednesdays
- Drop learning the language for the time being and work on pursuing CS until I secure an internship/job

Maybe this is obviois to some of you or maybe I just missed something really important , but here is my question: After perfecting my hiragana, I started to learn Kanji with a book called "Remembering the Kanji". It helps me to learn kanjis and their respective meaning in english, but I am unsure how to go about finding the pronounciation for these new learnt words.

For example: あきら should mean shining or in kanji 昭. But if I type in akira in hiragana in my keyboard the word for bright 明 appaers much before it. So how can I pinpoint which kanji has which pronounciation?

I'm just scared to learn all kanjis and their meaning in english, but at the end I am not able to use them in japanese, because some random website translated the kanji to the wrong definition

You sure? Jishoo only gives the onyomi reading しょう and it only means bright in the 昭昭 (しょうしょう ) form as a second meaning.

明 is easier and more commonly used, it's a sun and a moon, people used it because they had no lightning back in the day and it ended up as illumination/bright/light.

don't be too concerned with the *exact* meaning. the english synonyms should only be regarded as placeholders until you know enough Japanese to look at definitions of words and individual kanji in actual Japanese, should you wish to do so.
>but I am unsure how to go about finding the pronunciation for these new learnt words
I assume by 'words' you actually mean kanji. anyways, rtk should only be for getting a rough meaning of the characters. some kanji can be read 5+ ways, but most kanji are only read one of two ways. the best thing you could do is just learn the most common words and their pronunciation. if a reading of a kanji is relevant to you, it will likely come up at some point in your immersion, at which point you can mine the reading. do *not* waste your time trying to remember every potential reading of the most common kanji
