The original Japanese uses quite a few different font, sometimes for no apparent reason, and I try to reflect that in the translated version. Different fonts may require different adjustments to the linewidth. The original also uses different linewidth and font size depending on the available space. I try to match the original if I can make it look good (looking good is always higher priority than matching the original, with a possible exception being if the original looks bad).

For these scans, erase text using the clone tool, rather than a solid color. This can be used recreate the texture of the white spaces in the original. I pretty much use the clone tool for everything. I also the heal-selection script distributed as part of resynthesizer

but only in cases where it would be too tedious to do everything manually, and where the script gives good results.
Borders around text can be added around the text by enlargening a color-based selection on the text layer. Do not forget to feather the border selection to make them less sharp, if that matches the style of the original (it often does, unless imitating pixel-art).
