It's interesting how Reiwa is seemingly compatible with the end of Sotsu, despite Satoko not being a looper.

In both cases Rika leaves the village while Satoko (and mostly everyone else) stays. So them splitting up seems a natural event that probably happens in most fragments advancing past 1983, no witchery required. Which again brings the quality of the anime depiction of Satoko's early loops into question. If their starting point--a fragment where Rika forces Satoko to Lucia--was a rare oddity, why couldn't this be easily changed? Well, moving on.

Sotsu suggests that Satoko gets to finally grow up normally in a healthy and happy family environment with SSR Teppei and Satoshi waking up.
Then we see a well-adjusted adult Satoko in Reiwa, almost like a direct continuity. But it seems unlikely SSR Teppei exist in Reiwa fragment and there's still no word of Satoshi. So how did her teenage years go in Reiwa after Rika left?

I mean it's really only somewhat compatible because there's such a long time jump that you can explain away a large portion of the cast not being around, either "oh life happened and they left" or the older characters are dead. Also most of the characters end how they started in Sotsugou, other than Satoko/Rika I guess.

It's mainly Rika's magic anal beads that Hanyuu gave her and Satoshi missing(although we haven't been explicitly told his fate) that are hard to argue against. Although the witch shit is probably the biggest indicator.

The real issue stems from Teppei being a complete asshole in the original story with basically no redeeming qualities. And it goes even further than just him wanting money, like when he abuses Satoko while searching for the Hojos' money or when he goes after Rena's dad. When you think about it, Teppei's character was never explored much. He was a convenient plot device. Hilariously evil just for the sake of selling the horror of the situation. More of an obstacle to overcome than human. Plot demands him to be a rotten bastard, you get a dose of him reflecting just that but not much more.

And now that he played a bigger role, his characterization didn't get any deeper. Only more jarring because of the inexplicable contrast.

I've mentioned years ago that Teppei is one of Ryukishi's worst written named characters, having no backstory or justification for how he acts and simply being a brutish thug for the characters and reader to hate. Eve the faceless bullies at Ange's school had more depth to them, with the whole shared responsibility giving them at least some form of justification for their aggressive behavior. The idea of a better written Teppei doesn't bother me in itself, but actually putting it into practice would be a monumental task in order to not feel forced.

Takano actually had a developed backstory that made her sympathetic, and during Matsuri, she at least had the self-awareness to realize that her current path was terrible and self-destructive, but was unable to stop herself due to her sense of obligation towards Hifumi. When it's that bad even with the hindsight bonus of looping, it's hard to imagine a fragment where they solve the same situation and split ways amicably. Satoko has no reason to distrust Rika. They would have to already grow apart in middle school, but there's nothing in the setting enabling that possibility. And it would have to be so bad that Satoko is willing to tell Rika to fuck off instead of buying her lies and reassurance.

I guess the "normal" fragment path from 1986 onwards would be that Satoko follows Rika to Lucia and drops out after the club reunion instead of Eua shenanigans. That would allow them to naturally grow apart and fall into the futures they have in Reiwa.
But I don't know how that would work. Satoko literally doesn't have a home to return to, she has nothing left in the whole world. Is she going to live hidden in Keiichi's closet or what? Crash on Irie's couch? Renovate the old Houjou residence on her own with no money?

Well, before Gou/Sotsu most people took it as granted that Rika would be able to put all the looping stuff behind it and just live as a normal girl.

It's only R07's recent writing that's really putting the spotlight that even leading a normal life she will be forever traumatized and defined by those loops. It's just bizarre when he also wants to present that as a happy ending.
