How to rep sentence cards:

1. Read it in full, aloud, with kanji, no furigana.

Furigana are great for when you’re reading comics and such, and I heartily recommend you use books that have them, but you need to learn to function without them.

2. Know the meaning of every word in the sentence.

I don’t suggest you over-analyze the sentence, but you should know the function of each part of the sentence, otherwise you can’t truly be said to be understanding it. You don’t need to provide an exact translation when you give your answer, in fact, don’t bother translating at all. Of course, early on, you will be using Japanese and English together (later, Japanese only), and you will need probably get translations of the sentences, so put those translations in the “answer” field of your SRS; use them as a check of your understanding. But again, you just need to remember the gist of the translation (not the exact wording) for it to count as knowing the sentence.

3. Understand the meaning of the entire sentence

most words are not concrete things but abstract concepts that need more context to express their full meaning

when we look at an isolated word that we already know, we already have a general idea of it based on all the usages we've seen

sentence cards give you a chance to fix at least one of the meanings but since we're supposed to get sentences where there's only one unknown word you'll repeat words in many scenarios giving you the chance to capture the word fully.

they also put less strain on you because you infer the meaning from the sentence instead of you just memorizing meanings like it's a list. when you see a sentence card you think in the language. you get a complete thought so you can just feel the sentence without translating

with vocab cards what you do is a translation in your head. you have nothing to grab on to unless it's a word like "cat" or something
and this translation is obviously not satisfactory because it's only an approximation

then you move on to the next card and do the same.

the srs is supposed to show you the card right before your brain deletes that memory. when you see it again you recall the reading, and the meaning because you just studied it.

Hey all! Since my friends don't really have any interest in Japanese and talking about my experience with my parents is a little embarrassing, I just wanted to share my first 7 months of learning the language with someone and I hope you guys can give some feedback to how I'm studying now.

My Why

I've always had an interest in Japanese since middle school watching anime and the sorts. I've also travelled to Japan multiple times in my life and I really wanted to make the commitment to live there at least once in my life. I'm currently in college studying Physics and I've created the goal to go to graduate school in Japan last year in June, so I decided to learn the language during the summer of 2020 in preparation for when I graduate.

Does Kanji/ Chinese limit the development of the Japanese language? For example こうしょう　could mean 交渉工廠校生工商工匠高唱　and more. Although these sound differently in Chinese but they are all the same in Japanese, often causes confusion. This is an unfortunate event due to ancient China. Should Japanese weren't influenced by China, it could have a chance to develop their own language without borrowing from Chinese.
