Asiafag here. I'm fine with this interest as long as lesser known aspects of the subculture doesn't hit mainstream and start getting omgkawaii-retards into it. Being from an East Asian country, it's highly unlikely that locals would mistake you or any East Asian being Japanese, though I did experience foreigners asking about it based on appearance. Family and friends who found out about my interests teases and criticizes, but I hide my power levels as much as possible outside the internet.

People always assume I'm Korean if I step into a Korean store, and Chinese if I walk into a Chinese one. My parents are Chinese, but never bothered to teach me the language. There really isn't any incentive for me to learn either language, since nothing that interests me happens there that doesn't happen in Japan.

there's a large overlap in the appearances of east asians, obviously, but there are some subtypes that are pretty much only found in specific areas. like big-eyed japanese, or very narrow-eyed, angular-faced koreans. chinese are a bit diverse though given the huge range of areas they can come from.

i kind of enjoy being able to sort-of watch chinese-subbed anime and access the material on their p2p regions, some of which you just can't get easily on mainstream English BT or emule.

Asian cultural output is good, it shows we have some influence in what most would consider white dominated international scene and helps spread awareness, but not to a high enough level that people respect it. truth is that japan produces the best selection of pop culture in east asia; koreans are still new to animation (their own style i mean) and the chinese mainland doesn't measure up at all. taiwanese don't seem to do anything. hongkong and korean TV series and movies are decently entertaining, though.

there's a lot of crosspollination going on, thankfully, so maybe we'll see some improvement as chinese regions take more cues from japan and korea.

I always get the standard "Are you Chinese/Japanese?" when I meet people. I don't really get too bothered by it. Sometimes I'll say I'm from North Korea and that I was smuggled out by CHristian missionaries, or that my parents left me in Narita airport and I spent half my life wandering around in Japan, just to see their reaction. I'm always, ALWAYS surprised at how many people seem to actually believe me. lol ignorant white folk.

Parents don't care about my interests in animu. They grew up with some old school anime too, so it's not much different.

One thing that does piss me off, though, is when people say "omg, I LOOOOVE Asian culture!" and when they say "Asian culture" they really mean "Japan as portrayed by anime." Or when people say "Omg I LOOOOOOVE traveling!" and when they say "traveling" they really mean hang out at Narita airport or waste their money in gashapon machines in Akihbara or something. Japan is just another fucking country, no matter how kawaii and sugoi desudesu it seems to be in anime. I mean, fuck, broaden your horizons a little...fucking weeaboos.

That thing about "Korea invented it first" is pretty common and pretty funny, tbh. People aren't particularly aggressive about it, though, particularly Koreans in the US.
