Sup /jp/. /co/mrade here. I was on /v/ asking for games similar to Phoenix Wright, and I was informed that it was a virtual novel. I was told I should talk to /jp/ about those. So here I am. What virtual novels should I play first, and if I'm running Linux, can I still play them? I have NO idea where to start with all this.

>> No.3838038

What's a virtual novel?

But you should pick up tsukihime its a great gateway drug virtual novel.

I'm pretty sure most visual novels work fine through wine.
As for what you should play, http://vndb.org/

It's not that similar, but you might like Umineko no Naku Koro Ni. A lot of bullshit theories are pushed forward to solve murders. And the protagonist points a lot, and the song 'Dread of the Grave' sounds awfully similar to when Phoenix has an, 'I got it!' moment.

You're looking for visual novels. There are many translated titles atm, and mostly in form of eroge (containing 18+ material). But so far the only detective genre similar to PW is being translated and won't come out until months.

If you're a fan of mystery genre though, play Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Ignore the shitty anime.

If you care about gameplay and puzzle solving, most VNs are not for you and you're looking for adventure games, like Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory (both for DS) If story was what you liked best, then VNs are for you, but keep in mind they really are much closer to novels than games.

Tsukihime is a good starter. I can run it natively in OS X, thanks to someone on the mirror moon forums (they translated the game, google them and you'll see).

Linux can run a TON of windows games using a program called Wine, which is free but requires at least a bit of computer saviness to work.
I can probably go into more detail if you're interested.

I don't think there's a single person who runs Linux and doesn't know what WINE is already, or if they do they're retards.

I looked it up, and you're right.

>Kara no Shōjo's story revolves around Reiji Tokisaka (時坂玲人, Tokisaka Reiji?), a private investigator who is investigating a series of grotesque murders on the request of his former colleague, Kyozo Uozumi (魚住夾三, Uozumi Kyōzo?) of the Tokyo metropolitan police force. The murders are reminiscent of another string of serial murders that occurred six years ago prior to the game where Reiji lost his fiancée which drives him with a strong desire to solve this case. Reiji is also asked by Toko Kuchiki (朽木冬子, Kuchiki Tōko?) to find her real self, Reiji is initially unsure of what she means but later finds out that Toko is actually an adopted child. While working on the murder cases, Reiji also takes some time out to get to know Toko and to also try and find out where she has been when she was young and who her real parents are.

Well, I know what I'll be taking when translated.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Though, out of curiosity, are there any VN's that are more focused on comedy? I have noticed these VN's I'm seeing are either romance-focused or seems to be dramatic MindFucks. Any VN"s that are made to make you laugh?

There are many types of comedy, and some of them aren't really suited for everyone. But if you're looking for VN focused on comedy it's Majikoi, which is currently in translation.

Stuff with big portion of comedy would be Cross Channel, Yume Miru Kusuri, Sengoku Rance, Clannad, Kira Kira for example. But they also have drama or serious real deal stuff so it's the comedy is complement.

If you only played Phoenix Wright play the ones that don't have H content like Umineko, Ever17, Chaos;Head, or Planetarian. I would suggest better ones but it would be awkward if what you were looking for Visual Novels without H content and suddenly get loads of H scenes. I didn't flame or sage as there is already enough of that in this thread.

Tossing in few recommedations for OP, although many good ones have been mentioned already.
Sharin no Kuni is great. The summary on VNDB might seem pretty silly, and people who enjoyed the game agree it doesn't give very good image of it. There's some good humor there too.
