Been considering learning GLORIOUS NIPPON for a while, if nothing else being able to read it, and was wondering, does /jp/ know of any protips?
I live in Norway, and as far as I understand, there's not that many courses in Japanese around here.

Any help will make me happy.

AJATT is quite great. I was experimenting with methods for months before I realized that his style is exactly what I was moving towards. Another site that may be useful is: smart.fm

All but the absolute simplest stuff for little kids. Most teenager-level stuff has the hiragana pronunciation written above or to the side of the kanji, though.

Yes. You have to learn kanji if you want to read anything. Shounen manga has furigana, so you'll have some help early on...but VNs, Seinen manga, novels, video games...all kanji.

If you get any manga, get one published in a shounen or shoujo magazine. Those will always have furigana next to the kanji for you to read.

Most games just use kanji without furigana unfortunately. There's the Pokemon games, which are completely in hiragana/katakana, but it's honestly annoying to read.

Not OP, but I was told there is a DS vidya that teaches japanese kids how to read and stuff. Can I get the title?

manga for all ages have furigana (hirgana over the kanji that tell you how they're read).
Manga for older audiences and VNs do not, in general.

Either way you should be prepared to learn some 600-800 kanji if you want to be able to read anything close to fluently. If you enjoy learning kanji you can go on and do all 2000 jouyou and then some, if you don't you'll get by using an electronic dictionary.

I don't think furigana are useful for non-japanese learners, except that they make it easier to look up the word. For me, if I know a word, I can almost always read its kanji. I don't know the furigana words to begin with. That is, I think, how it should be if you start learning kanji early on in your studying.

So basically: read heisig until you get the hang of mnemonic learning, so you can use that to memorize kanji. Then, try to have your kanji ability keep pace with your vocabulary.
