They sleep on Japanese futons, which are basically soft mattresses that fold up and you stick in a closet, so the area formally known as your sleeping area can now become a living room. I find them incredibly comfortable, but a lot of westerners don't (especially if they prefer soft fluffy beds). I'd get one but I have no fucking idea where I'd buy one outside of Japan, as everybody in the west thinks a futon is a fuckin folding chair/couch thing.
