You really should NOT lose with One-Eye commanders.
The only truly hard battles are Baba and Yamagata.
Get Kenshin+Uruza+Natori for Yamagata, get Omachi and a few other sturdy characters for Baba.
Spread the rest out.
Your only concern would be being unlucky and suffering permanent death for one of your units.

The one eyes are awesome, but since it's so early and I took them as a bonus, their troops are low (except Omachi of course, who I gave a popularity staff to on the very first turn). It's hilarious to use her againt Soun and Ran. Also the Tokugawas (I wiped out all of the Tanukis in one shot for the last battle).

I was really irritated when I went to the effort of capturing all the Tanuki. Normally I just blitz over Tokugawa in a turn or two, but on my current play through I decided to go slowly and capture them all.

They are all really shit! even Tokugawa! their stats are about as good as generics and they are low level too, I wish I hadn't missed out on Senhime, now. I'll only keep them around until I get their character clears, I think.

On a slightly related note, what do people usually do for foot soldiers? I never seem to have enough, while having far to many warriors to use. Most of the non-generic foot soldiers have crappy stats compared to other unit types, and I don't really like using generics.

Tokugawa, Tadakatsu, and Sakibara are all good units. The others are, however, complete shit.

Oh and you only need to capture Sakibara and then see the scene where he talks about how tanukis love tempura. Then you can recruit Tokugawa and the rest will join through his purple events. I capture Tadakatsu too, just because it makes the last battle easier.

I've personally never gotten that amount, however if the person abuses the scaling factor and keeps all of his troops low, while just poring money, draft papers, character bonuses, etc into their foot soldiers it could be possible.

The max number of troops does go up with difficulty level, yes. And by a lot. Check the wiki, it lists the formula for all classes and the multipliers for difficulty.
That screenshot was on Normal though, so you can see how you can get a lot of troops no matter what. Ashigaru have the highest troop limit (along with Archers, I believe) and do not contribute to enemy scaling, so they're units for which it's good to buy troops.

Additionally, I'll add this screenshot for teh lulz.
This is the +5000 troops item. If you decrease all troop counts of non-Ashigaru units to less than 300 and use this items, some scaling recruits and reinforcements may come with thousands of troops. Then you can fire the unit with the +5000 item and give it to that unit for a 9999 troop unit. Then you can bring back your other classes to 300 and the enemy scaling won't be that bad.
I've never done it but it would probably be quite amusing.

Yeah, "Footsoldier" is the translation. Ashigaru is the original Japanese name. Look it up on the 'net if you feel like it, the in-game class functions a lot like its real-world counterpart. The game mechanics guy did a pretty good job on them.

True. Auto-heal starts sucking about 1/4 of the way into the game and although you can occasionally exploit it via Standby against enemies with no actions left, it won't save you a lot of money because of the built-in 1g Ashigaru replenishment cost.
I usually give Improved Initial Guard to All-Guard tanks though, so I guess it's fine.

Elina seems pretty average to me, but Souun is good, due in no small part to his special Oni2 attack costing only one action point. Plus he's the only character I've ever seen one-shot an Orochi Girl, and also the only character who can kill Gigai automatically.

Monks also tend to be fairly amazing units to have. You can make up for the weaknesses of being a bit slow and taking more counterattack damage from your melee with amazing options.

Youkai Ward: This makes beating one-eye house ridiculously easy, even on 5 star mode. Even against non-youkai, it doesn't count as a melee move, which means monks take no counterattack damage.
Convert Action: Most of the special monks come with Divine Protection 2 or Convert Action 2, but get a generic and have them learn Convert Action 1. Then realize it means Suzume gets 4 assassinates (or Natori gets 4 miko storm 2's). Or make captain battles really easy by converting after having lv99 kentarou use kentarou-kun slash repeatedly.

Overtime: Need a few extra turns so your strong unit can act last? That's what monks are for.

Sure, they need more investment, but monks are easily more versatile than foot soldiers.

Elina is mostly great because you can start with her on any second game and she has great stats. putting her with a foot soldier in virtually any early fight is virtually an automatic win.

Later on, she's not as good, but by then you can upgrade her shikigami or just have her learn Summon Ogre 2 so she can do that then all-guard.

If you just started you don't need a tier list, you just have to beat the game and can do that with generics of any class other than archer.

You don't have a choice, but after that, you should move quickly and conquer whatever you can. If you can take out Mouri, do that, because their units are good. The Tanuki aren't a very hard fight, but they just give you a single Footsoldier.

Any and all of them are good early on. Turban starts to lag behind later on when you realize that his 0 attack and average int make him not terribly good as a footman, and natsumi papa doesn't have great combat abililty after enemy units catch up in levels. I haven't really used the warriors.

Makutsudou remains useful for having convert action and youkai ward, and elina's all guard will always be useful (especially against the monster units with Lightning and the diviners with shikigami).

It'll take a looooong time for them to be hired. All of the commanders of the countries that you defeated are available for hire now, so there's an obscenely huge recruitment pool.
Keep killing enemy commanders so they have to hire replacements though and they'll show up eventually.

I just got Souun in my party for the first time, and I am reading some of his events - he seems to have something going with with Natori regarding Orochi.

In my last game, I defeated Orochi and I really don't want to do it again - I leveled Rance up to 99 and had a party of 30 max leveled commanders, and still only beat him after numerous attempts using the last attack of my last living commander, with 30hp remaining.

Can /jp/ tell me if anything interesting happens with Souun if you defeat Orochi while he is in your party?

Don't get me wrong, I love Kenshin. I was hoping she would get an ending appropriate for a legendary warrior. And she did. The finest ending for a character as hers I could hope for.

I have to say that Kenshin is my favorite route overall. Isoroku's ending I like more though (but only by a little).

Ran is really good to, though Keikoku having absolutely no backstory or anything kind of hurts her as an antagonist (as does RANDOM OGRE FINAL BOSS). I do like that the ending puts Ran and Soun together though.

True History is by far my least favorite. I think it suffers because it has to think about the over arching plot of the series, and can't dawdle too much on the cast of this game. I do think the Shimazu have a much more awesome role in this than in Ran though (mostly because they remind me of the Reed Brothers from Fire Emblem 7). Depressing, but manly as hell.
