Finished Day 9 of HF yesterday and my god virtually every single moment that was supposed to be a tearjerker worked on me but I really cannot take the fucking Rain scene seriously at all. I started laughing by the time Shirou said "I'll be your personal superhero", I couldn't contain myself, it really was worse than I had remembered. Kinda baffling how much more restraint Nasu showed in Fate and UBW (leading to much more effective scenes) versus how melodramatic he gets in HF. It helps that I can actually give a shit about the romances in the first two routes. Whole of HF has me asking "How long til the next Kirei or Rin scene?"

You really don’t understand Shirou’s character and FSN at all if you don’t understand why Shirou would act the way he does in HF. It’s an obvious subversion of the previous routes and it’s a falling arc for Shirou to fall from from grace as he keeps deluding himself over the shadow and thinking that he can save Sakura. It’s after Shirou uses the arm does the reconstruction of the hero begin once again as he becomes more heroic than ever before. That's the thing - I don't hate Sakura. I don't even (actively) dislike her (though her fans on 4chan can get grating, but I don't see this as a justification for attacking the character). I do hate the squeeky chipmunk voice her VA puts on though, which makes me say thank God for Dark Sakura because I can actually appreciate the performance (and her scene where she rants about how much she hates, envies and resents Rin IS SO MUCH BETTER than any of her overdrawn, melodramatic self-pitying scenes). It doesn't help that the romantic progression is all wonky. Replaying the VN really shows how despite the Rin route being the "least romantic" one the progression is rather evenly spread unlike in Fate and HF where there are big sudden leaps in the feelings the characters have for one another. This I think works and feels earned in Fate but doesn't in HF and the romance is undermined by the romantic triangle stuff with Rin because just on Day 7 he forgets to have lunch with Sakura to go have a meet-up with Rin. This doesn't of course show that he likes Rin more than Sakura, but it does show she still isn't that quite dear to him... and then two days later he throws his ideals away for her and has sex with her. In that regard the romance was slightly improved in the movies - though it still ultimately fails since it fails to properly set up the conflict between the Tohsaka sisters. It just doesn't feel earned and still would've been overly melodramatic regardless. Your Distortion (probably my favourite romantic moment in the VN) isn't even all that romantic really, but you can really feel the love the two have for each other just by how concerned Rin is about Shirou and how grateful he feels about that fact. It's really a lesson in less is more. And I can hardly dislike the scene because of Sakura herself since I love Shirou remembering her during his fight with Kirei, a moment that truly earns the grandiosity it has.

Sakura is bad because she's a woman. Shinji is objectively a better character than her because he abuses her. Men exerting power over women means they're objectively better written and she's weak and lame for it.

It's not about the whole concept per se - it's the execution that's wonky. There's a spectrum between "has a crush", "is falling in love" and "has finally fallen in love with" and Shirou's feelings for Sakura still feel like they're in the "is falling in love with" phase by the time the dust-up in the school with Shinji happens. We go from Shirou being too scared to tell Rin he thinks he should stay home to watch over the sickly Sakura to him having a massive ideological and emotional breakdown (by the way - Shirou breaking down in the park and Illya coming to comfort him? Absolutely majestic and part of the reason I'm sour on the Rain scene since it failed to follow up on that for me). The events preceding the big romantic moments in Fate and UBW really go that extra mile to sell you on just how much Shirou loves Saber and Rin in each route respectively. Compare for example the scene where Shirou jumps in to save Rin from Kuzuki to the confrontation with Shinji - everything about the scene where Archer betrays Rin really sells you about how much he loves her. From how angry he is at Archer at betraying her because of "the expression she will make", the way he says he will jump in to save her even if he dies because he can't imagine going on living if she's dead ("living as a corpse" as he puts it), the way he analyzes her behaviour and how she's putting up a front - it all provides excellent build up that the Confession serves as the catharsis to. You can easily do the same thing with Saber. But in HF, the big selfless action that Shirou takes... is to save Rin? In the scene with Caster and Archer, Shirou's mind is constantly on Rin, even as he's going there he is absolutely hyperfocused on her. This isn't true of the Shinji kidnapping. Sakura still feels like a crush slowly becoming something more in that scene, not the partner of a lifetime. Feels like the Rain scene should've been further along in the story (or the Sakura romance rewritten to be a bit more romantic up to that point, as well as have Shirou be at least half as concerned about her as he is with Rin in UBW in the equivalent scene - and implement the "Sakura is jealous of Rin's relationship with Shirou" with more finesse, because I do like most of them like the phone scene but some do end up undermining the romance, especially with how dense Shirou is with not recognizing Sakura's jealosy of Rin).

Once the romance gets going, it becomes amazing.
As dumb as Kirei dying the way he does is and not very satisfying for him as a character, Shirou getting the resolve to kill him as the EMIYA theme plays is great.
Basically everything from the date, through the confrontation with Gilgamesh, to the basement scene is one of the best sequences in FSN as a whole.

Shirou is basically in a video game situation in F/HA with him having infinite lives and being able to repeat the whole 4 days. Like in video games once he reaches a major event he’s able to checkpoint and start from that event after. The thing is that the other Shirou’s playing in F/HA that don’t make it to that timeline/point die. Even so as long as one Shirou reaches an event then progress is saved for them all to start again.
