What do you think about the act of self sacrifice as a plot device in VNs ?

Does it affect you? What "hurts" you more? When the main character sacrifices himself for a loved one or when a loved one sacrifices him/herself for the main character.

Have you ever shed a tear while reading such things?

That short comic has the complete negative ending of To Build a Fire.

The guy that does it in Ever17 made me cry like a bitch. Dude was a motherfucking hero.

>> No.3804640

when the main character sacrifices and is rewarded with no only loss and pain, but the exact loss and pain they were trying to avoid

because it really happens IRL and I can relate

While this affected me greatly, I still think that Haruka route from Edelweiss had a much huger impact on me.
I mean when the MC was slowly falling apart because he loved her so much. It was really sad.

>> No.3804671

It really depends on the build-up and execution rather than who is sacrificed. But generally:

Protagonist = Manly tears
Heroine = Bitch Tears

It can easily go the other way around though.

Like anything else it depends on the execution. Overall I definitely like the theme and have cried many times to such scenes.

With his thumb silly.

When the heroine dies I'm usually pretty torn for the rest of the night.
When the MC dies, I feel a calm satisfaction for some reason.

>> No.3804757

With the right context it's really powerful

A friend giving his life for the protagonist's cause can be IRL brofist worthy

The protag sacrificing himself for another character can be strongly characterizing bad end or plot point if he attempts, but somehow survives

I usually don't appreciate heroines playing the silent self-sacrificial role, hiding love, hooking them up with who she thinks he really likes, etc... because it half makes it seem like the protagonist's fault for not noticing

Strait out heroine sacrifices can be terrifically heroic and tragic

btw good topic OP

That picture is so ridiculous. I think maybe it was supposed to be serious but I couldn't help but laugh at the bad art and the fact that that dog has a knife. How does a dog even know what knives is?

The epitome of win filled story telling.

That was the saddest story I have ever come across. It was also the most beautiful damn thing I had ever read.

In my case it depends. I'm not much in the sacrificing side, nor I like others sacrificing themselves for me, but there is some instances like when Shirou fights alone vs dark saber in the Heaven's Feel. I would gladly do it if I were in his shoes.

>>3804656
I felt the same. The feeling when Haruka died was damn hard, but I hoped she didn't came back to life, it would make more interesting in my eyes, like her grandma's case. I felt happy with the ending, but at the same time felt like it missed something.

>> No.3805564

All things equal the loved one dying is harsher. The main character is supposed to man up and protect his people or die trying so someone he's looking after dying for him is a failure. Of course, it all depends on the specific story.

>> No.3805581

Character that missed the good end, screwed up, and has to take the self sacrifice option makes me sad.
