Replaying the FSN VN, just started UBW. In a few threads back I mentioned it's kinda silly how Shirou doesn't figure that Rin saved him when she mentions that Lancer had killed in the school and even yells it out when he throws himself in front of Berserker and gets his guts spilled out. But in UBW he kinda catches on when she lets it slip she knows he died in the school. I suppose Shirou already liked Rin more than he did iat the start of the other two timelines.

Anyway, some thoughts of the Fate route - really enjoyed it, despite it being my least favourite of the routes. The lows were worse than I remembered and the highs better. I'm am unrepentant Rinfag, but I really, really, REALLY like the Shirou-Saber romance. It's an interesting one since Nasu made the bold decision to have the romance be much more slow born, subdued and platonic than the ones in UBW and HF, which is funny since by the end of it Fate has much more explicitly romantic content with lovers much more comfortable with their feelings than UBW, the "least romantic" of the routes, has. It really speeds past it with the date, the bridge and the confrontation with Gilgamesh. But the romance with Saber really kicks off once (for some reason) Shirou tracing Caliburn causes the romantic pair to start having dreams of each others' lives. So by the time the foreigners' cemetery scene occurs in UBW and the rain scene happens in HF, the Saber romance is only just starting in earnest. This could've easily been handled in a horrible fashion and ended up terrible so props to Nasu.

There is an issue with the pacing though, and it's not necessarily how the romance is handled itself, but rather in how there is a dearth of anything else to latch onto in the early portions of Fate. The plot in the Fate route is... not that good. It's all just very going through the motions. Up until Bloodfort it's just not very engaging. The entire route revolves solely around the romance and nothing else so the lack of content in the form of action, actual Grail War conflict or anything other than SoL scenes which are honestly CONSIDERABLY weaker than the ones in UBW and HF (probably because the most prominent characters in them are simply not relevant to it). The early 20-30% of the route, maybe even 50%, have way too bloated of a cast. Sakura and Taiga are phased out of UBW in a way better fashion. The actual plot of the route is kinda weak throughout but at least it synergizes quite excellently with the character conflicts and arc as well as the thematic content so it's easy to overlook that... but man those early portions really suffer.

And the exposition is a given of course.

8/10 to a 9/10. Everything after Gilg gets introduced is just 10/10 though.

yeah, the Fate route could really use a rewrite that's more like UBW with other fights and interludes going on that make it feel more exciting instead of it all being about Shirou and his daily life/romance with Saber. You could have more action and character moments that don't feel monotious of just going through the day with more things going on in general. Still, the Fate route has great moments and probably the best ending in any of the routes as the Fate ending is amazing overall and with Saber's last farewell in Camlann.

Another couple things... did Nasu and Urobuchi forget that Kirei was the one who cursed Kiritsugu with the Grail mud and not Angra Mainyu? I mean looking at how the events are described it's clear Nasu himself wasn't 100% sure how the events of the previous Grail War unfolded. A flashback Shirou has to the Fuyuki Fire when Saber reminisces about fighting Gilg in a "sea of fire" implies that they fought after the Fire started but this is contradicted virtually immediately when it's confirmed their fight was broken up by Kerry ordering her to blow up the Grail. Similarly it seems Nasu wasn't quite sure if the Fire was caused by its destruction or by Kirei's wish, which is why even Kirei himself seems inconsistent about it.

Also, how come Saber only realizes the much spoken of fake priest is her old Master's most feared opponent in the bad end where you refuse to go to the church basement? Rin literally calls it the Kotomine Church before they go there lmao.

I really like the exchange between Kiritsugu and Kirei right after Kerry escapes from Angry Manjew's clutches even though it contradicts Kirei's words that they never spoke in HF. It helps show just how Kiritsugu could not understand Kirei whereas Shirou in HF does. The parallels between the two rivalries is the primary reason I love Zero for all its faults. The relationship between Kerry and Kirei even elevated the Shirou-Kirei relationship for me.

I don't know about that. Caster and Souichiro were very boring midbosses and the conflict feels extremely drawn out and poorly paced compared to the Herc in the forest midboss fight. It helps that the fights in Fate are varied and go from master to master pretty quickly instead of focusing on a couple for 50% of the story.

The thing is Caster arc has a lot of twists and fun moments during it (Kuzuki defeating Saber, Saber getting kidnapped, Archer's betrayal, Hercules and Illya getting defeated, and so on). It has this feeling of many factions are on the move compared to Fate where it's mostly villain of the week format with Saber defeating a servant after the other.

Well leaving the merits of Caster and Souichirou as antagonists aside, UBW has plenty of action and plot twists back to back while the early portions of Fate are just boring. In Fate, you go from the fight with Berserker to exposition, mild character drama and SoL stuff to the fight with Assassin to more boring exposition, character drama that isn't as compelling as what happens later and SoL stuff to Bloodfort, where the story finally picks up and then slows back down once Illya and Berserker are defeated with more dumb SoL stuff until Gilg is introduced. In UBW meanwhile, you have the fight with Berserker, then not long after Rin jumps Shirou at their school, then Rider shows up, then Rin and Shirou form an alliance, then he gets kidnapped by Caster, then Shinji sets up Bloodfort, then they find out about Souichirou, they there's the date, then Caster gets Taiga and Shirou loses Saber, etc. UBW keeps the inertia going and is consistently engaging. And throughout all this, most of the down time is spent on developing Rin and Shirou's characters as well their romantic relationship.

Fate merely teases you with plot twists but nothing happens. We get teased about a connection between Illya and Kiritsugu in a Bad End but nothing is ultimately revealed and Illya stays a dull non-character that way too much screen time is devoted to. We get teased about a connection between Assassin and Rider as well as a fourth Master at the school and yet nothing. That's whole thing is dealt with off-screen. While UBW uses its downtime to develop its romance, Fate pointlessly wastes time with Rin and Shirou cooking contests and as a massive Rinfag I think she should've been in it less, seeing as how she's basically there just for exposition dumps. For about a third to a half through the route, it barely feels like there's even a Grail War going on. And whatever the merits of Caster Souichirou, at least it feels like they are agents who are constantly out to get our duo of protagonists while Berserker and Illya's reluctance to strike them feels... contrived. More so in Fate than in UBW and HF since nothing happens there.

I don't mind Fate not having a lot of action and plot twists in its early stages in principle. You don't need a brisk pace to be good. But you do not an emotional core to keep us invested and Fate does not because the romance between Shirou and Saber only truly gets going post-Berserker. The stuff with him not wanting her to fight is great, no doubt, but it isn't enough.

I can see why Miyako gets precedence. She has so little screen time even considering the old days. And this is the remake so she needs reintroduction. It's nice Nasu even made the Noel route and released it. Though it would be better to get a more serious attempt in the remake. Noel feels like the type of character who has to get it there since there will never be a better opportunity where the threat of Roa exists, Ciel and her are poised for conflict, it's a vampire centric story and someone prone to possession by Roa is the MC and also conveniently checks all her boxes while being insane enough to respond unlike a normal human being when faced with vampires to highlight the difference thematically with the jp from France. It's literally impossible for her to get a satisfyingly written conclusion or alternative fate than to do it here but it seems like a tall order and I don't trust Nasu or TM to give enough fucks to put in the effort.

Even disregarding the fact that it's irrelevant to the actual character in the source material, it's just not even true since what is so "good ending" about getting basically a low-tier fanfic or a handful of lines written that doesn't even properly address the issues or have any sense of permanence?
